Within a year of starting karate lessons Yolo Mtirara went from a novice to being elected to represent the Western Cape JKA team at the South African JKA Karate championships in May.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The 13-year-old from Zwelihle joined the JKA Hermanus dojo under the leadership of Sensei Ronnie Knott a year ago and has since won gold as well as silver medals in competitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Yolo\u2019s remarkable progress has his mom Zikhona Mtirara bursting with pride. \u201cI am so happy and so so proud of my son!\u201d she exclaimed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
But, she admits, she is a bit concerned that she won\u2019t be able to afford her son\u2019s transport and accommodation costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI am a single mom to Yolo and his sisters Zusange and Shantel, who also excel at gymnastics. I really hope there are people who can assist to help make my son\u2019s dreams of participating in the national championships and one day representing South Africa in karate come true.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The South African JKA Karate championships will be held in Johannesburg on 17-18 May. Participants in the event stand the chance to be selected for the national team that will compete in the World Championships in Japan. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
A letter issued by the Western Province JKA Team Coach states that the cost per team member to attend the SA Championships is \u201cin excess of R6 000\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
