Die skilderagtige Overbergse dorp Genadendal is oorspronklik as \u2019n sendingstasie gestig toe George Schmidt, \u2019n Duitse sendeling van die Morawiese kerk, hom op 23 April 1738 in die Baviaanskloof gevestig het.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Genadendal pronk nie net met die oudste sendingstasie in Suid-Afrika nie, maar ook die oudste openbare biblioteek in die Wes-Kaap en tweede oudste in Suid-Afrika. Volgens die boekregister van die Genadendal-museum is die biblioteek in Junie 1824 geopen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Die 200-jarige bestaan van die Genadendal-biblioteek is verlede Vrydag (28 Junie) op luisterryke wyse gevier. Di\u00e9 viering is deur Alan Winde, die Wes-Kaapse premier, Ricardo Mackenzie, die Wes-Kaapse minister van kultuursake en sport, Cecilia Sani, die direkteur van Wes-Kaapse biblioteekdienste, verskeie gemeenskaps-belanghebbendes, asook Theewaterskloof-munisipale amptenare en ander ge\u00eberde gaste bygewoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Die eerste boekeversameling is in die Middle House aangehou, wat ook die kerksaal vir \u2019n wyle gehuisves het. Die sendeling Hans Peter Hallbeck het boeke as \u2019n noodsaaklike bykomstigheid vir die skool en kerk in Genadendal beskou en \u2019n vertrek as biblioteek ingerig met boeke wat hy van verskeie bronne verkry het. Die meeste boeke het uit die 18de en vroe\u00eb 19de eeu gedateer en is in drie hoofgroepe verdeel, naamlik Engels, Duits en Hollands. Die oudste boeke in di\u00e9 versameling is twee Bybels \u2013 een wat in 1629 in Duitsland gedruk is en \u2019n Hollandse een wat uit 1682 dateer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In blougrotte bewaar<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Oor die jare is die boeke in verskeie persele gehuisves, onder meer die Blougrotte, \u2019n gebou agter die pastorie. Die biblioteek word tans in \u2019n nuwe gebou, wat in 1992 opgerig is, gehuisves en val onder die Theewaterskloof-munisipaliteit se beheer. Di\u00e9 gebou is onlangs opgeknap en die binneruim is modern, lig en gebruikersvriendelik.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Joanna Marzec-Visagie, die bestuurder van volhoubare ontwikkeling, het in die openingsrede ges\u00ea: \u201cVandag eer ons die werk en toewyding van diegene wat die waarde van geletterdheid en opvoeding besef en begryp het \u2013 di\u00e9 wie se stemme en optredes die weg vir toekomstige geslagte voorberei het.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cecilia Sani, die direkteur van Wes-Kaapse biblioteekdienste, het ges\u00ea die TWK-biblioteke is toonaangewers en innoveerders. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHulle was die eerstes wat met die YeBoneer-program begin het. Di\u00e9 program het \u2019n geweldige invloed op ons lees- en liter\u00eare ingryping. Die TWK is een van die min munisipaliteite wat openbare biblioteekdienste, gemeenskapsontwikkeling en gemeenskapsuitreikprogramme op \u2019n sinvolle wyse ge\u00efntegreer het.\u201d<\/div>\n

Sani het genoem met 376 biblioteke het die Wes-Kaap die meeste biblioteke in die land en daarmee kan di\u00e9 biblioteke \u2019n beduidende verskil in die lewe van gemeenskappe maak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ricardo Mackenzie, die Wes-Kaapse minister van kultuursake en sport, het in sy toespraak ges\u00ea boeke is \u2019n noodsaaklike deel van ons lewe. \u201cOns word deure hierdie 200-jarige viering herinner aan die noodsaaklike rol wat openbare biblioteke in die gemeenskap vervul. Hulle verskaf toegang tot inligting en bevorder \u2019n liefde vir lees. Dit was vanoggend wonderlik om ons Cape Access eCentre [gratis toegang tot rekenaars en internet] hier te sien en die waardevolle diens wat dit aan gemeenskappe bied.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nie net boeke nie<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Die Wes-Kaapse premier, Alan Winde, het ges\u00ea: \u201cBiblioteke gaan nie n\u00e9t oor boeke nie. Biblioteke gaan oor geskiedenis, die onthou van ons verlede en die kennis en voorbereiding vir ons toekoms, maar dit gaan ook oor mense. Ons Cape Access-sentrum help jong mense met skooltake, navorsing en om vir betrekkings te soek. Ons moet lees bevorder. Ons moet seker maak mense het boeke en hou daarvan om te lees,\u201d s\u00ea Winde.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hy s\u00ea lees met begrip is \u2019n groot probleem in Suid-Afrika. \u201cAgt uit 10 graad 4-leerders kan nie met begrip lees nie. Dit is almal se verantwoor\u00adde\u00adlik\u00adheid om leerders hiermee te help. Sowat 43% van Suid-Afrikaanse huishoudings het geen boeke nie, terwyl die w\u00eareldgemiddelde 218 boeke per huishouding is. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDie gemiddelde uitvoerende hoofde van Fortune 500-maatskappye lees gemiddeld 60 boeke elk per jaar. Dit is ons taak om mense aan die lees te kry. Gee \u2019n boek as \u2019n geskenk aan iemand,\u201d s\u00ea Winde.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSynde ons nou die 200-jarige bestaan van hierdie biblioteek vier, het dit my laat dink \u2013 hoekom nie \u2019n Genadendal-boekfees in hierdie biblioteek nie? Kom met \u2019n plan en ek sal \u2019n plan maak vir \u2019n begroting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

N\u00e1 die toesprake het Paul Adendorff, \u2019n bekende toergids van Genadendal, gaste op \u2019n interessante toer van die biblioteek tot by die geskiedkun\u00addige kerkplein geneem.
