Dit was Mary Brown van Bosstraat in Hawston se reaksie nadat sy in 2022 op \u2019n reusepofadder in die braaiplek buite haar huis afgekom het. By \u2019n ander geleentheid het sy \u2019n massiewe slang langs die toilet gewaar toe sy dit wou gebruik.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In die mees onlangse voorval het haar hond byna op \u2019n pofadder getrap wat ongesiens by haar huis ingeseil het. Die afgelope ruk, vertel sy, gewaar hulle al hoe meer slange naby of op hul eiendom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDie weer raak nou warmer en al meer slange kom uit. Ek weet nie hoe hulle by die huis inkom nie, maar ek is al so bang dat ek saans die beddegoed eers oplig voordat ek inkruip. Ek het \u2019n massiewe hartaanval gehad en ek is net bang dat ek nog een kan h\u00ea as ek groot skrik vir \u2019n slang. My grootste vrees is dat \u2019n slang my kinders of honde kan pik.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Die feit dat Suid-Afrika tans \u2019n ernstige tekort aan slang-teengif ervaar, is rede tot groot kommer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Netwerk24<\/em> berig dat SA Entstofprodusente (SAVP) oor geen voorraad beskik nie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDie meeste groot hospitale in ho\u00eb\u00adrisikogebiede het teengif, maar het dikwels heeltemal te min in voorraad,\u201d s\u00ea Johan Marais, hoof van die Afrika-slangbyt\u00adinstituut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mary vermoed die slange broei in die digte bosse in die ou begraafplaas langs haar huis en s\u00ea sy het die Overstrand-munisipaliteit (OM) by verskeie geleenthede versoek om die gebied skoon te maak. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dean O\u2019Neill, die munisipale bestuurder, bevestig dit en s\u00ea: \u201cOns neem kennis van mev. Brown se versoek en het reeds met haar gekommunikeer dat die gebied rondom die begraafplaas skoonge\u00admaak sal word. Die feit dat \u2019n digte melkhoutbos aan haar erf grens, bemoeilik egter sake aangesien dit \u2019n beskermde boomspesie is.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Die OM waarsku inwoners om op hul hoede vir slange te wees aangesien die slangseisoen aangebreek het.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cVan Oktober tot April kom slange al meer voor en is die gevaar van slangbyt aansienlik ho\u00ebr. Hoewel slange oor die algemeen nie aggressief is nie en slegs sal pik as hulle bedreig word, is dit wys om \u2019n slang te vermy indien jy een gewaar,\u201d waarsku hy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

O\u2019Neill wys egter uit dat die meeste slange in Suid-Afrika skadeloos is en \u2019n positiewe rol in die ekostelsel vervul. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jonathan Powers, \u2019n bekende slangvanger in die Hermanus-omgewing, s\u00ea die vier algemeenste giftige slangspesies wat in die Overberg voorkom, is pofadders, die Kaapse kobra, die boomslang en die rinkhals. [Die rinkhals is egter nie so algemeen nie.] <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kaapse kobras se gif is neuro-toksies \u2013 dit tas die senustelsel aan en is lewensbedreigend. Simptome soos moeilike asemhaling ontwikkel binne 30 minute tot vier ure. \u2019n Pofadder se gif is sito-toksies \u2013 dit tas die weefsel aan en is ook lewensbedreigend. Simptome neem langer om te ontwikkel, gewoonlik van ses tot 24 ure. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Van die wenke wat kundiges gee, sluit in om die slangbyt-pasi\u00ebnt gerus te stel en gemaklik te maak en so gou as moontlik by \u2019n hospitaal of kliniek te kry aangesien teengif slegs deur opgelei\u00adde mediese personeel toegedien mag word. Skakel die hospitaal en laat hulle weet \u2019n slangbyt-pasi\u00ebnt is op pad. Probeer om \u2019n goeie beskrywing van die slang te kry en moenie die bytplek suig of \u2019n toerniket gebruik nie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
