Renaldo Matthee (25) en Arno Neethling (29), wat in die Caledon-distrik boer, ken van trekker ry en die plaaslewe. Maar hierdie twee gesoute jong boere verruil gereeld hul trekkers en stewels vir duik-booties<\/i><\/span>en \u2019n boot om vir die gesogte Trans Agulhas-rubberboot-wedvaart te oefen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Albei boer voltyds, maar dit keer hulle nie om ten minste een keer per week die lang pad na Struisbaai of Hermanus aan te pak om op hul boot op die see uit te gaan en te oefen nie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAs dit re\u00ebn en ons is nie op die plaas besig nie, gaan oefen ons, al is die see onstuimig. Hopelik is daar \u2019n rowwe dag of so tydens die Trans Agulhas so\u00addat dit in ons guns kan tel,\u201d s\u00ea Renaldo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Die w\u00eareldbekende wedvaart, s\u00ea Renaldo, het sy belangstelling van jongs af geprikkel omdat hy \u201cvan kleintyd af \u2019n petrolkop en adrenalien-junkie<\/i>\u201d is. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dinge het sedert verlede jaar uiteinde\u00adlik vir hom en Arno reg begin val en hulle het volstoom begin oefen om gereed te wees vir die Trans Agulhas, wat op 28 Desember in Plettenbergbaai begin en op 31 Desember by die Strand eindig. Di\u00e9 wedvaart strek oor vier dae, waarin deelnemers 700 km met hul rubberbote afl\u00ea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hul voorbereidings het verder \u2019n hupstoot gekry toe Renaldo \u2019n boot gekoop het by iemand wat voorheen aan \u2019n wedvaart op die Theewaterskloofdam deelgeneem het. Renaldo self het ook aan hierdie ren deelgeneem en goed gevaar. Arno erken hy is \u2019n groentjie wat nog nie aan enige groot wedvaart deelgeneem het nie, maar dit skrik hom glad nie af nie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Arno en Renaldo het ook gaan kers opsteek by kenners soos Dreyer en JD van Niekerk, wat ook in die Caledon-distrik boer en voorheen aan die Trans Agulhas deelgeneem het. \u201cOns doen baie navorsing \u2013 veral oor die tegniese aspekte,\u201d vertel Renaldo. \u201cBuiten die enjin is die skroefdie belangrikste; jy moet die weerstoestande kan lees om te bepaal watter soort skroefom te gebruik, want jy mag net een skroefvir die hele skof van die dag gebruik.\u201d<\/i><\/i><\/i>\n<\/i><\/i><\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Die aspekte van die wedvaart waarna hy die meeste uitsien, vertel Arno, is die adrenalien van hul deelname, om nuwe mense te ontmoet asook die nuwe ervaring. <\/i><\/i><\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

\u201cEk dink ons kanse is goed, want ons werk goed saam, ons al twee het goeie uithouvermo\u00eb en ons hou van spoed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hoewel di\u00e9 twee kliphard oefen om hierdie droom \u2019n werklikheid te laat word, kort hulle dringend nog borge om hul uitgawes te help dek. <\/p>\n

Die inskrywingsfooi is R13 000, petrol-uitgawes vir die boot en twee voertuie van die ondersteuningspan word geskat op R9 700 en verblyf op R9 000. R4 000 is vir maaltye vir die span begroot. Hulle kort dus altesaam R35 700 vir hul uitgawes.<\/p>\n

Die onkoste van \u201cbranding<\/i>\u201d vir die borge, s\u00ea Renaldo, moet nog bepaal word. Daarbenewens moet Arno en Renaldo ook duikpakke en -stewels, valhelms, handskoene, die nodige veiligheidstoerusting en ekstra petrol en onderdele vir die boot h\u00ea. Hulle sal ook gazebo\u2019s<\/span><\/i>en T-hemde vir die span h\u00ea met die borge se kentekensdaarop. Die span gaan ook \u2019n voertuig met \u2019n sleepwa h\u00ea waarin hulle gaan slaap en die ekstra onderdele berg. Van die borge wat reeds aan boord gekom het, is Strandkloof-woonwapark, Tsogo Sun Caledon, JF Hersteldienste, die Malkoppan-gasteplaas en Muisbosskerm Restaurant, Merry Jane, Keerom Skeer en Scan en Basson en Seuns Vervoerdienste. <\/i><\/p>\n
