As the world commemorated the 2024 International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD), on the theme \u201cAmplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future,\u201d the Western Cape government held a fun day on 3 December at Hermanus High sport grounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The IDPD is an annual observance celebrated worldwide on 3 December. Established by the United Nations (UN) in 1992, the day is dedicated to raising awareness about the rights and well-being of people who have disabilities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
It aims to promote a better understanding of disability issues, break barriers down and encourage actions that foster greater inclusion and accessibility in societies worldwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to the organiser of the event the key objectives of the IDPD are to raise awareness, promote inclusion and equality, advocate for policy change and celebrate progress. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cDespite the progress made people with disabilities continue to face numerous challenges that hinder their full participation in society,\u201d said Sharon Naude, herself in a wheelchair and who regularly fights for the rights of people with disabilities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThese challenges include physical and architectural barriers such as lack of accessibility in public buildings, transportation systems and communication technologies, discrimination and stigma. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cPeople with disabilities are often marginalised and face social stigma, inadequate health care and education, and unemployment and poverty. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cPeople with disabilities face disproportionately high rates of unemployment and are more likely to live in poverty. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cInaccessible work environments and discriminatory hiring practices contribute to their economic marginalisation,\u201d Naude said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She also emphasised that the International Day of Persons with Disabilities is a reminder that a truly inclusive society can be achieved only when every person, regardless of ability, has the opportunity to participate fully in all aspects of life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt is a call to action for governments, organisations and individuals to continue advocating for the rights of people with disabilities and to work towards breaking down the barriers that persist in our societies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
