Haar bek was gemuilband en die inspuiting wat haar uit haar ellende sou verlos, was reeds opgetrek en gereed om toegedien te word. ‘n Oproep wat ges\u00ea het: “Stop. Ek sal vir haar ‘n pleegsorghuis vind,” het die nou bekende en geliefde hond Hope se lewe gered.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Romanda Marais van Caledon-dieresorg het di\u00e9 oproep gemaak en sy deel Hope se storie met Hermanus Times. “\u2009’n Fietsryer het een van ons lede gebel en ges\u00ea hy het ‘n hond in ‘n waterpyp op ‘n grondpad op ‘n plaas gesien. Ons het twee dae na haar gaan soek. Op die derde dag het ons ‘n oproep gekry dat ‘n plaaswerker die hond tussen riete gevind het en dat hy daar sou bly totdat iemand haar kom oplaai. Ek kon nie self gaan nie, maar toe ek ‘n foto van die hond sien nadat sy by die veearts afgelaai is, het ek gebel. Dit was haar o\u00eb wat my gevang het \u2013 o\u00eb wat om hulp gepleit het. Toe weet ek daar is hoop en ons gaan dit laat werk. Hope was die enigste naam wat by my opgekom het.”\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marais het vir een dag grasie gevra sodat sy ‘n pleegsorghuis vir Hope kon soek. “Ek het binne ‘n halfuur een gevind. Lesley Higham, ‘n engel uit die hemel met wie ons dikwels saamwerk, het dadelik aangebied om Hope in pleegsorg te neem.”\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Die vermoede is dat Hope, wat net vel en been en erg brandsiek was, veearts toe gebring is om uitgesit te word, maar toe haar eienaar hoor wat dit sou kos, is sy summier sommer iewers in die veld gelaat om dood te gaan. “Hope was erg skrikkerig vir mans. Ons vermoed dat sy deur mans mishandel is en heel moontlik net vir teeldoeleindes gebruik is,” s\u00ea Marais. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hope se pad na herstel was ‘n lang een wat baie geduld, opofferings en liefde geverg het. “Hope was s\u00f3 swak dat sy nie uit haar hok kon opstaan of loop nie. Ons moes haar met twee handdoeke ondersteun sodat ons haar kon weeg. Sy het 17kg geweeg. Hope is vir ses weke weekliks gebad en vir brandsiekte behandel, medikasie gegee en haar toonnaels, wat al begin inkrul het, is geknip. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Ons het haar vertroue in die mensdom stadig weer probeer opbou. Wat baie gehelp het, is dat Lesley elke dag by haar was en haar nie net gereeld met rome ingesmeer het om haar vel weer gesond te maak nie, maar ook baie liefde en aandag aan haar gegee het. Een van die werkers, ‘n man, het baie met haar gewerk en stadigaan is haar vertroue in mans weer opgebou,” s\u00ea Romanda.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hope is vandag ‘n gelukkige hond.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

“Hope kon twee weke lank glad nie loop nie. Ons het haar steeds met handdoeke ondersteun om haar vir haar behandeling na die bad te bring. Sy het darem binne ‘n week sewe kilogram opgetel, maar was nog steeds vel en been. N\u00e1 die tweede week het sy haar eerste vyf tre\u00eb gegee, maar sy was steeds baie swak, hoewel sy teen di\u00e9 tyd al 10kg opgetel het. N\u00e1 die derde week het sy die eerste keer self uit die huisie waarin sy gebly het, uitgestap gekom toe ons aangekom en sy my gehoor het,” s\u00ea Marais.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hope se storie het mense nie net landwyd nie, maar selfs w\u00eareldwyd aangegryp. Op ‘n vraag oor hoekom haar storie mense so aangegryp het, antwoord Marais: “Ons het gereeld Hope se storie en haar vordering asook foto’s op Caledon-dieresorg se Faceboekblad geplaas. Die reaksie op ons plasings was oorweldigend. Mense van oral het rome en speelgoed gestuur asook finansieel bygedra. Ek dink daai o\u00eb het mense gevang \u2013 nes dit my op die eerste dag ‘gevang’ het. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Ook haar vordering het mense aangegryp en ek glo mense het saam met ons gehoop dat Hope se storie ‘n gelukkige einde gaan h\u00ea.”\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dit was ‘n lang en by tye moeilike reis om Hope te kry tot waar sy vandag is \u2013 ‘n gesonde, gelukkige hond wat nou 30kg weeg. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Dit was nie net ‘n uiterlike en mediese geval nie, maar ook ‘n emosionele reis. Ons moes haar blootstel aan so baie dinge en haar leer hoe dit voel om bloot net ‘n hond te wees. Ek dink nie sy het ooit die kans gehad om dit te wees nie,” s\u00ea Marais. “Jy kan nie anders as om aan so ‘n hond geheg te raak nie. Sy het my van dag een af vertrou en ek het net geweet ek kan haar nie teleurstel nie. Ek het baie trane gestort oor Hope \u2013 baie daarvan uit dankbaarheid en blydskap… Soos die eerste tree wat sy gegee het, die eerste keer wat sy my hand gelek het en die eerste keer wat sy geblaf het, het my in trane gehad. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Ook omdat ek weet hoe naby sy aan die dood was.” Caledon-dieresorg het baie aansoeke gekry om Hope aan te neem. N\u00e1 sorgvuldige keuring en verskeie ontmoetings is Hope onlangs aangeneem. Sy word oorlaai met liefde en aandag in haar nuwe huis. Hoewel sy ‘n pragtige nuwe hondebed het, het Hope besluit haar regmatige slaapplek is op die bed in die middel tussen haar mense. Die rusbank is ook een van haar gunstelingplekke om ‘n vinnige slapie te vang. Sy word, heeltemaal tereg, soos ‘n prinses in die huis behandel. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Hope het Caledon-dieresorg ook hoop gegee en baie deure oopgemaak. Ons beoog om ‘n Hope Foundation te stig sodat ons nog ander diere wat moontlik in ‘n soortgelyke situasie is, kan help,” s\u00ea Marais. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Caledon-dieresorg bedank almal vir hul opregte belangstelling in Hope, asook vir al die hulp wat ontvang is. ‘n Spesiale dank gaan aan Lesley en haar span wat dadelik ingewillig het om vir Hope in pleegsorg te neem. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
