November was Mansgesondheidsbewusmakingsmaand. 1 Desember was Internasionale Dag vir mense met gestremdhede en in November was dit Waarderingsdag vir Familieversorgers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mans is in die algemeen minder geneig om oor hul gesondheid \u2013 fisiek sowel as geestelik \u2013 te praat en daarom is ‘n bewusmakingsveldtog, waar openlik oor verskeie aspekte met betrekking tot mans se gesondheid gepraat word uiters, belangrik. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Die Caledon-biblioteek, in samewerking met die NG kerk Caledon en die Kankervereniging van Suid-Afrika (KANSA), het op 21\u2009November ‘n geleentheid aangebied ter bewusmaking van mansgesondheid, gestremdheid sowel as waardering vir versorgers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Die verrigtinge is deur ds. Gerome Haupt geopen. Rhodes Johannes, wat al twee sy bene moes laat amputeer, het sy verhaal met die gehoor gedeel. Hy het openhartig gepraat oor hoe hy van ‘n gesonde, aktiewe man, wat nou rolstoelgebonde is, sy bene verloor het asook die geestelike beproewings wat dit meegebring het.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Testikul\u00eare- en prostaatkanker is van die algemeenste kankersoorte onder mans. Pieter Kroutz, ‘n kliniese verpleegkundige by die Caledon-kliniek, het die belangrikheid van testes-ondersoeke beklemtoon, verduidelik hoe dit gedoen word en moontlike gevaartekens uitgewys. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Suster Maylene Meyer van die Caledon-kliniek het die vroe\u00eb simptome van prostaatkanker bespreek en mans aangemoedig om die kliniek of ‘n mediese praktisyn te besoek indien hulle enige van die genoemde simptome ervaar, aan\u2013gesien vroe\u00eb opsporing uiters belangrik is.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elnette du Toit, ‘n onkologie- maatskaplike werker by Hermanus Oncology, het met haar jare se ondervinding nie net die hulp van versorgers aan slagoffers se familielede bespreek nie, maar ook genoem dat di\u00e9 versorgers ook hulp en ondersteuning nodig het en ook voorbeelde gegee van hoe ‘n mens versorgers kan bystaan. Naomi Philander van KANSA het met behulp van ‘n draai-diagram presies verduidelik waar die prostaat gele\u00eb is. Di\u00e9 diagram het die grootte van ‘n gesonde prostaatklier aangedui asook hoe dit deur die verskillende stadiums van prostaatkanker vergroot. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Philander het die belangrikheid van vroe\u00eb opsporing beklemtoon. Baie mans is huiwerig om dokter toe te gaan, want hulle dink onmiddellik aan die “gevreedse vingertoets”, maar ‘n PSA-toets (prostaatspesifieke antigeentoets) behels bloot van ‘n bloedtoets vir ontleding. Die uitslag van di\u00e9 toets bepaal of die pasi\u00ebnt vir verdere ondersoek na ‘n kliniek of geneesheer moet gaan. Suster Annalise Stuurman het die PSA-toetse gedoen, wat gratis deur KANSA aangebied is. Indien mense vir verdere ondersoeke moet gaan, sal hulle direk deur KANSA gekontak word, wat ‘n verwysingsbrief vir ‘n kliniek of geneesheer sal verskaf. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Right to Care, ‘n organisasie sonder winsbejag, het standaard mediese observasies soos bloeddruk en bloedsuikertoetse aangebied. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ds. Dewald du Toit van die NG kerk Caledon het die gehoor oor geestesgesondheid toegespreek. Op ‘n vraag van Hermanus Times oor hoekom hulle by di\u00e9 spesifieke geleentheid betrokke geraak het, antwoord hy: “Ons as NG gemeente Caledon sien deurentyd die behoefte aan versorging in ons gemeenskap en ook die mense wat seer het en swaarkry en ons wil God se hoop en liefde probeer aangee. Om KANSA te ondersteun en om saam met die biblioteek te werk, was ‘n groot voorreg.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Met die vorige ronde van vrouegesondheid het ons hulle ook ondersteun en nou met mans- en geestelike gesondheid wil ons dit net so ‘n bietjie op die tafel sit om te s\u00ea hoe ons mekaar op verskillende terreine versorg. Iets waarop ons klem wil l\u00ea, is om ondersteuning te bied aan mense wat ondersteuning (versorging) bied. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Elnette du Toit het uit ‘n perspektief van maatskaplike werkers verduidelik hoe ons die mense wat regtig swaarkry, kan help. Hoe rus ons hulle toe? Watter praktiese raad is daar vir hulle? As ons dit kan regkry om sekere dinge net op ‘n ander manier te kan sien, kan ons God se hoop en liefde beter aangee.”\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gerhard Afrika van Wyk van die Caledon-biblioteek s\u00ea: “Ons het dit goedgedink om mansgesondheid, gestremdheidbewusmaking en waardering vir versorgers in een geleentheid te inkorporeer en aan te bied en dit het goed gewerk. Ons is baie ingenome met die opkoms, want mans woon gewoonlik nie geleenthede by nie. Hoewel ons wyd en syd adverteer het, het ons ‘n dag voor die tyd slegs 12 antwoorde gekry van mans wat die geleentheid wou bywoon en die PSA-toets wou laat doen. Wonder bo wonder het KANSA by die geleentheid 26 PSA-toetse gedoen nadat omtrent 50 mense die geleentheid bygewoon het.”\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Die raadslid Weldon Wells, die speaker van Theewaterskloof-munisipaliteit, het die bedankings gedoen. Kankerpasi\u00ebnte wat by KANSA geregistreer is, kan by hulle aanklop vir volwasse doeke en toerusting soos rolstoele en toiletstoele (commodes). <\/p>\n\n\n\n
