The fact that hundreds of bikers from Cape Town and surrounds as well as from all over the Overberg regularly partake in the annual Overberg Toy Run definitely dispels the misconception many people have of bikers. Bikers have big hearts when it comes to charity, especially where children are concerned.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On Sunday 30 November the parking area of Caledon Fresh Stop was a spectacular sight to behold. Leather jackets, boots, helmets, badges and gleaming machines laden with toys were at the order of the day. There was a buzz of excitement in the air with lots of bike talk and final securing of toys to the bikes before the procession of bikes left for the Birkenhead Brewery outside Stanford.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Many bikers do the Toy Run and other charity rides every year. Some out-of-town bikers told Hermanus Times that they particularly like this ride not only because of the large number of participants but because of the beautiful scenic route.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For well-known Caledon businessman Pottie Potgieter this year was his 10th Toy Run. “I have ridden every year since 2015. To be able to help less privileged children is a cause close to my heart, especially as it is for children from the Overberg region. Family and friends contribute and then my wife Amanda and I buy the toys as well as stationery. For me it’s a way of giving something back to the community.”\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Annuska Beyers, who always stands out because of her fun costume rode her fourth Toy Run on Sunday. Annuska missed last year’s Toy Run as she has moved to Alice Springs, Australia, but this year she has a special story. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“I came back to South Africa to get married and actually we got married the day before the Toy Run. Just before going on our honeymoon I convinced my husband Tiaan to come and do the Toy Run, his first one. So this will be my last Toy Run for quite a while and sadly we have to sell our bike.” Despite the sweltering heat both Annuska and Tiaan were dressed in fluffy bear and bunny costumes respectively and their bike proudly displayed a sign saying “Just Married”.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
