BREDASDORP – An uncontrolled fire on Heuningberg mountain continues to rage above Bredasdorp, creating hazardous conditions as thick smoke engulfs the town and surrounding areas, forcing road closures and prompting health warnings for vulnerable residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The blaze, which has passed above the town high on the mountainside, remains out of control as emergency services prepare defensive measures for other at-risk areas. Communication networks in the region have been compromised, hampering coordination efforts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to the Capue Agulhas Municipality the Bredasdorp-Struisbaai road has been reduced to stop-and-go traffic due to zero visibility caused by dense smoke. Authorities are urging motorists to avoid the area entirely and seek alternative routes where possible. “Residents living at the base of Heuningberg mountain have been placed on high alert, with warnings that firefighting operations may commence above their homes later this afternoon. The proximity of the fire to residential areas has raised concerns about potential property damage and public safety,” the Cape Agulhas Municipality said on their Facebook page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Local authorities have issued urgent health guidance for residents: All doors and windows should remain closed to prevent smoke infiltration; pets must be kept indoors for their safety and elderly residents and individuals with respiratory conditions, including asthma sufferers, are strongly advised to relocate to alternative accommodation until smoke conditions improve. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Emergency services are working to establish containment lines and prepare additional areas that may be threatened by the fire’s advance. The compromised communication infrastructure is presenting additional challenges for coordination between fire crews and emergency management officials. Residents are urged to stay informed through official channels and to avoid the affected area to allow emergency vehicles unimpeded access to the fire zone. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Residents are of the opinion that the fire could have been brought under control earlier, but according to them the authorities did not react quickly enough. “If they had brought the fire under control already this morning, when it was only burning on one side of the road, it would not have spread so quickly,’ said one resident.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
