It was a momentous occasion for Swartberg Secondary School in Caledon when its brand-new state-of-the-art science laboratory was officially opened.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The construction of the Science Teaching and Learning Centre (TLC) was made possible through the partnership among Advancing Knowledge NPC, Garden Cities Archway Foundation and Western Cape Education Department. (“Schools boast new science labs”, Hermanus Times, 10 September 2025).\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Swartberg’s principal Adrienne Delport welcomed the dignitaries who made this R800 000 project possible, the principals of the other Caledon schools and especially the learners, this being their special day. “Today is a very joyous occasion because our school is a beacon of hope in our community and this actually gives learners another reason to choose to attend our school. We would really like to excel in science and with this project we can do that. We are so thankful for all the donors, funders and everybody that made this day possible.”\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Prof Shaheed Hartley, director of Advancing Knowledge NPC, said: “The textbook definition of the purpose of science education is to equip individuals with critical thinking, problem solving and analytical skills to understand the natural world so they can make decisions and engage responsibly with scientific and technological advancement. Science education should foster curiosity, creativity and an enquiring mind to prepare people for careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“We started the project in 2004. To us the professional development of teachers was so important. We needed to make sure teachers in the classrooms are able to teach the subject at an advanced level of understanding. That is why we are running courses for teachers.”\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
John Matthews, CEO of Garden Cities Archway Foundation, said: “Nobody can deny an individual education, nor can anybody take it away from them. Education is key to success. Swartberg’s motto is ‘Knowledge Enlightens’. Knowledge gives one clarity, which is the purpose of this facility. We do this to educate our youth. We do this to pass the torch on to the new generation. We would like to congratulate the school on this facility, but now it is in your hands. It depends on you what happens to this facility.”\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
