Hermanus High buzzed with anticipation on 20 August as nine courageous young speakers took to the stage for the school’s annual Public Speaking Competition, delivering thought-provoking addresses that showcased the diverse perspectives and passionate voices of today’s youth.\r<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The prestigious event drew an audience of 600 Grade 10-12 learners, who were treated to an afternoon of engaging oratory covering topics as varied as plastic surgery, the destructive power of gossip, the courage to embrace being “uncool”, and heartfelt reflections on the final years of high school life. Adding gravitas to the occasion was a distinguished panel of adjudicators, comprising Adrian Louw, a respected local attorney, Elnora Gillion, Deputy Executive Mayor of the Overstrand, and Ryno Viljoen, CEO of FinGlobal. Their combined expertise ensured a rigorous and fair evaluation process, with each judge providing valuable feedback to help develop the speakers’ skills. The range of topics chosen by the participants reflected the concerns of Generation Z, from societal pressures around appearance and social media to more philosophical reflections on identity and belonging. The diversity of subjects demonstrated the depth of thinking among Hermanus High’s student body and their willingness to tackle complex, sometimes controversial issues.\r<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Each speaker demonstrated remarkable courage, insight and passion,” noted the event organisers, teachers Dayne Nel and Dan\u00e9 Pretorius, who praised all participants for their preparation and bravery in addressing such a substantial audience.\r<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After careful deliberation, the judges announced their results: Jurgens Kotz\u00e9 (winner), Lwandle Thekwane (second place) and Johan de Villiers (third place)\r<\/p>\n\n\n\n
