KHAYELITSHA – Harare police have opened an inquest docket following an incident that occurred in Funza Street, Harare, on Wednesday 27 May, where a man was electrocuted.

The incident reportedly occurred at 20:58.

Provincial police spokesperson Captain Themebakzi Mpendukana said that, according to reports, the 39-year-old man was connecting illegal cables to an electricity pole when he was electrocuted.

“He fell and sustained head injuries. He was declared dead at the scene by medical personnel. Investigations are continuing,” said Mpendukana.

Community reaction

Khayelitsha Safety and Security Forum chairperson Bonga Zamisa said it was unfortunate that members of the community had resorted to fixing electricity problems themselves. He added that illegal electricity connections are a criminal offence.

“Our position is clear, the law must take its course against the criminals. We are urging the community to abide by the law,” said Zamisa.

He also blamed Eskom, accusing the power utility of dragging its feet in addressing electricity-related problems in the communities.

Zamisa urged Eskom to electrify all qualifying informal settlements to minimise the risks associated with “izinyoka” (a term used to describe illegal electricity connections).
