Community welcomes raid on illegal shebeens in Gugulethu

Gugulethu police, together with Firearms, Liquor and Second-hand Goods Control (Flash), Law Enforcement and the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), conducted a crime-prevention operation in Gugulethu on Wednesday, 27 May. The operation formed part of Operation Prosper, which sees the SANDF assisting in the fight against crime. It focused on illegal liquor trading and related criminal activities in the area.

Provincial police spokesperson Capt FC van Wyk said during the operation members targeted illegal liquor outlets operating within the community.

Authorities seize liquor worth R80,000

“Two illegal shebeens were raided, resulting in the seizure of approximately 426 litres of liquor with an estimated street value of R80 000. All confiscated liquor was handed in as exhibits for safekeeping.”

He said the operation formed part of ongoing efforts by law-enforcement agencies to combat crime and remove illegal activities that negatively affect the Gugulethu community.

Western Cape provincial management commended all members from the different entities involved for their dedication, cooperation and commitment to reducing crime in Gugulethu.

SANCO welcomes law enforcement crackdown

A leader of the South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco) in Gugulethu, who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisal, described the issue of illegal shebeens in the area — particularly in informal settlements — as a serious concern. He said the alcohol was confiscated in the Lotus informal settlement.

“The issue of substance abuse is a problem in Gugulethu as a whole. Our children are dying because of drugs and alcohol. We need these kinds of operations where law enforcement agencies come without being invited. Some of these illegal shebeens do not even close. They operate after hours,” he said.

He urged the community to report or speak out against any wrongdoing taking place in their areas.
