Die delikate blom en garingagtige blomstele van Psoralea cataracta, \u2019n tipe fonteinbos wat slegs naby bergstrome in die Tulbagh-streek van die Wes-Kaap voorkom en in 1804 laas waargeneem is. <\/div>\n

Een van die eerste bekende plantspesies wat in die 1800s weens bosbou- en landboubedrywighede in die Wes-Kaap uitgesterf het, is herontdek.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brian du Preez (26), \u2019n PhD-student in plantkunde aan die Universiteit Kaapstad, het Psoralea cataractais<\/em> ontdek toe hy onlangs per ongeluk op \u2019n groep van die plante langs \u2019n voetpaadjie naby \u2019n rivier op \u2019n plaas in Tulbagh-distrik afgekom het. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tot op hede was P. cataracta<\/em> slegs bekend as gevolg van \u2019n enkele voorbeeld wat in 1804 by die Tulbagh-waterval gevind is. Die plant is in 2008, n\u00e1 vele vrugtelose soektogte, amptelik in die rooidatalys van Suid-Afrikaanse plante as \u201cuitgestorwe\u201d verklaar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Du Preez het onmiddellik geweet watter vonds dit was, omdat hy as vrywilliger reeds lid was van vorige soekpogings in die omgewing van Tulbagh-waterval saam met Custodians of Rare and Endangered Wildflowers (Crew) \u2019n organisasie wat hom beywer vir die bewaring van skaars en bedreigde veldblomme. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cToe ek daardie delikate garingagtige blomstele sien, het ek gew\u00e9\u00e9t dis Psoralea cataracta<\/em>,\u201d vertel Du Preez.Prof. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Charles Stirton van die Verenigde Koningkryk (VK), Du Preez se medepromotor en \u2019n internasionaal erkende spesialis van die genus Psoralea<\/em>, het sedertdien bevestig dat hy inderdaad die lang verlore spesie wat in 1804 laas gesien is, herontdek het. \u201cVir my is die uitstaande kenmerke die merkwaardige steunblaartjies, baie lang draadvormige steeltjies, en die unieke blomkleur. Dit is \u2019n baie belangrike vonds aangesien dit wys hoe die Kaap se bergagtige gebiede nog steeds relatief min nagevors is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nadat Psoralea cataracta in 1804 laas gesien is, is dit deur Brian du Preez, \u2019n PhD-student in plantkunde aan die Universiteit Kaapstad herontdek.<\/div>\n

\u201cGegewe die feit dat baie van die Kaapse flora slegs n\u00e1 brande opkom en \u2019n kort leeftyd het, \u00e9n dat hierdie brande soms ongereeld voorkom, is die kans om op die regte tyd in die regte omgewing te wees, redelik skraal. Welgedaan met \u2019n wonderlike vonds, Brian,\u201d het Stirton per e-pos uit die VK geskryf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ismail Ebrahim, projekbestuurder van Crew, beaam dat dit \u2019n uitsonderlike vonds is: \u201cDit is werklik baie ongewoon om \u2019n spesie te vind wat al vir so lank as uitgesterf beskou is, iets wat vir donkiejare nie gesien is nie. Met Kaapse flora is dit self moeiliker, aangesien die meeste spesies beperk is tot \u2019n baie klein gebied en jy dit maklik kan mis. Dit bewys net weer die waarde van regte outydse veldekskursie-plantkunde,\u201d voeg hy by. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2016 het Du Preez as honneurstudent in plantkunde aan die Universiteit Stellenbosch (US), twee spesies van die ertjiefamilie, Polhillia ignota<\/em> en Aspalathus cordicarpa<\/em>, herontdek wat as uitgesterf beskou is en laas onderskeidelik in 1928 en die 1950s gesien is. Hierna het hy ook in 2017 sy MSc-graad aan die US behaal met navorsing oor Polhillia<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vanjaar het hy reeds nuwe spesies van Aspalathus <\/em>ingesamel wat op sandduine op die walle van die Rietrivier in die Swartruggensberge, noord van Ceres, groei. Hy is tans haastig om die spesie te beskryf, aangesien hierdie gebied van die Rietrivier geoormerk is vir boorduitbreiding. \u201cOns kan slegs beskerm wat ons reeds beskryf het. Slegs spesies wat formeel beskryf is kan rooidatalysstatus verkry, wat dit dan wetlik beskerm teen ontwikkeling, afhangend van die bewaringstatus,\u201d waarsku hy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Daarom het Du Preez besluit om vir sy PhD-studies \u2019n hersiening van die genus Indigofera <\/em>in die groter Kaapse blommeryk, aan te pak. Hierdie diverse genus bestaan uit meer as 100 spesies in die streek, met ten minste 30 nuwe spesies wat wag om formeel beskryf te word. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Du Preez, \u2019n boorling van George, het die afgelope ses maande rduisende kilometers in sy Nissan-bakkie afgel\u00ea. Die gebied wat hy gedek het strek vanaf die Richtersveld, reg deur tot by die Oos-Kaap en alles tussenin.
