Hy het al in feitlik elke afdeling van die universiteit gewerk en n\u00e1 52 jaar by die Universiteit Stellenbosch het Basil van Wyk (65) sewe rektore sien kom en gaan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Basil was met sy aftrede \u2019n administratiewe beampte en geboubestuurder van die RW Wilcocks-gebou in die Fakulteit Lettere en Sosiale Wetenskappe aan die US. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Hy was daar deur die apartheidsjare, toe die US nog net \u2019n blanke instelling was. Hy was ook daar om die ontbanning van struggle-bewegings soos die ANC en die UDF te aanskou en die dag toe die universiteit die eerste keer in 1992 sy deure vir alle Suid-Afrikaners oopgemaak het.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As jy met Basil praat, is dit duidelik dat hy \u2019n bewaarplek van institusionele inligting en kennis is wat hy opgebou het van die dag dat hy die eerste keer die US se hoofkampus in Stellenbosch betree het, \u2019n besluit wat meer deur behoefte as \u2019n beroepskeuse gedryf word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cEk het skool verlaat toe ek 12 jaar oud was en in graad 6. Ek het by my ouma en oupa in Kylemore grootgeword, maar hulle het regtig finansieel gesukkel en ons het geweldig gely as gevolg daarvan. Daar was dikwels nie kos op die tafel nie en soms het ek gewonder hoe ons gesin gaan oorleef,\u201d verduidelik Basil terwyl hy nadink oor 3 Junie 1969, die eerste dag wat hy by die US begin werk het.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cHierdie daaglikse stryd is die rede waarom ek die skool verlaat en besluit het om eerder \u2019n inkomste te verdien om tot ons huishouding by te dra. Ek moes my drome om \u2019n onderwyser te word, prysgee.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Basil het as \u2019n algemene handlanger by die universiteit begin werk en is later na verskeie poste soos voorman, verwer en administratiewe beampte en geboubestuurder, bevorder. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOm suksesvol te wees, moet \u2019n mens hard werk en die vasberadenheid h\u00ea om by jou einddoel uit te kom. Ander mense sal jou nie motiveer nie. Jy moet jouself motiveer. My motivering was die swaarkry wat ek gesien het wat my gesin moes verduur weens \u2019n gebrek aan geld.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cEk moes myself afvra, wil jy vir die res van jou lewe sukkel en wil jy jou hele lewe lank op jou laat trap en gebruik word? Wil jy iemand se \u2018boytjie\u2019 wees? Dit was hoe \u2019n mens destyds beskou is.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Die antwoord was nee en Basil se reis om sy omstandighede te verbeter het so begin. \u201cEk moes baie harder as ander werk, want ek het nie enige kwalifikasies gehad nie. Ek moes leer om met my o\u00eb te \u2018steel\u2019 en hoe om verskillende dinge te doen om \u2019n sukses van my loopbaan te maak.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Hy het elke kursus voltooi wat hy kon vind en hoewel sommige van hulle nogal moeilik was, het hy volhard. \u201cDaar was dae wat ek in die klas gesit en wonder het, waaroor op aarde praat hulle,\u201d s\u00ea hy laggend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Basil het later ook \u201cteruggekeer\u201d skool toe om sy graad 9 deur die Abet-program te voltooi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Een van die hoogtepunte van sy loopbaan, s\u00ea Basil, was om genooi te word om namens die C3-personeel te praat by die gedenkteken wat in 2014 vir wyle prof. Russel Botman gehou is. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cHy het \u2019n oopdeur-beleid gehad en ek het baie tyd spandeer om met hom te praat oor die pos wat hy beklee en hoe hy \u2019n bydrae kan maak om alle personeel en studente by die universiteit ingesluit te laat voel. Dit was dus moeilik en seer toe hy so skielik dood is.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Tans werk Basil aan \u2019n boek oor sy lewensreis. \u201cEk is gese\u00ebn op my lewensreis en God het altyd vir my \u2019n deur oopgemaak wanneer ek dit nodig gehad het.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAs dit nie Sy plan was nie, sou ek nie die dinge gehad het wat ek vandag het nie.
