In die ou dae van die Kaapkolonie is die regsgesag oor die Stellenbosch- distrik uitgeoefen van die Drostdy wat gebou is op \u2019n eiland in die Eersterivier waar die Universiteit Stellenbosch se Kweekskool vandag staan. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Waarom hierdie belangrike gebou juis op die eiland geplaas is voordat die een vertakking van die rivier toegegooi is, weet niemand nie. Miskien was hulle in daardie tyd nog bang vir leeus en sou die rivier aan alkante beskerming bied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dit is voor hierdie gebou dat die landdros se vrou in 1826 die Norfolkden (Araucaria heterophylla<\/span>) geplant het, wat vandag soos \u2019n groen piramied voor die Kweekskool uittroon. Met \u2019n hoogte van sowat 48 meter is dit die grootste van sy soort in Suid-Afrika en is dit verklaar tot een van ons land se kampioenbome, bome wat spesiale beskerming geniet ingevolge die Nasionale Boswet van 1998. <\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2019n Jonger voorbeeld van hierdie den is voor Huis Neethling in Van Riebeeckstraat te sien en \u2019n pragtige een voor die herehuis by Old Nectar in die Jonkershoekvallei.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Soos sy naam aandui, kom die Norfolkden van die eiland Norfolk in die Stille Oseaan, gele\u00eb oos van Sydney, Australi\u00eb, en is sy volledige naam Norfolk-eilandden. Daar word die boom tot sowat 60 meter hoog. Dis nie eintlik \u2019n den (familie Pinaceae<\/span>) nie, maar is \u2019n lid van die Araucariceae<\/span>, waarvan daar heelwat soorte is wat baie soos die Norfolkden lyk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Vroe\u00ebr dae is die Norfolkden glo baie langs die Valsbaaise kus aangeplant om te dien as bakens vir vissersbote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Anders as wat \u2019n mens sou verwag, kan die Norfolkden ook dien as potplant en groot getalle word in Florida, VSA, vir die Kersmark gekweek. Nadat hulle hul doel as Kersboom gedien het, word hulle steeds aangehou vir versiering binne of buite die huis.
