Prof. Wim de Villiers, rektor van die Universiteit Stellenbosch, het in die onlangse Kaapstad-fietstoer meer asR32 500 vir behoeftige Matie-studente ingesamel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
De Villiers en enkele Maties, Maties-alumni en Maties-personeel, het as deel van die US Alumni se nuwe jaarlikse geldinsamelingsfonds fiets getrap om verskeie maatskaplike kwessies op die US te help bekamp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Die fonds, Bridge the Gap, is in Oktober 2021 gestig om veral alumni, maar ook die bre\u00eb studente-gemeenskap, ouers en selfs vriende van die US, uit te nooi om Maties op hul pad na sukses te ondersteun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Volgens Ilse Arendse, kommunikasie-bestuurder vir die US Alumni, toon data dat studente verskeie maatskaplike kwessies in die gesig staar en dit juis tot die stigting van die fonds gelei het.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cStudente sukkel om hul studiegeld te betaal, wat tot groot skuld lei. Voedselonsekerheid is \u2019n groot probleem en baie studente kan nie bekostig om die basiese, soos sanit\u00eare produkte, te koop nie,\u201d s\u00ea Arendse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sy meen hierdie soort kwessies staan in die pad van studente se gereedheid vir hul toekoms en die w\u00eareld waar hulle gaan werk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Volgens De Villiers moet voedselonsekerheid glad nie in die pad van studente se sukses staan nie. \u201cEk voel ge\u00eberd om deel van \u2019n span Maties te wees wat omgee. Ons studente staar groot uitdagings in die gesig, maar voedselonsekerheid moenie een daarvan wees nie,\u201d s\u00ea De Villiers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Volgens Arendse het hulle al meer as R436 000 ingesamel deur aan die Kaapstad-fietstoer en die Cape Epic-bergfietsren vir Bridge the Gap deel te neem. Di\u00e9 geld word aan verskeie US-afdelings gestuur om die studente-gemeenskap te ondersteun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOns afdeling samel die geld in, maar ons wys nie self die geld en hulpbronne aan studente toe nie. Die Sentrum vir Studenteberading, byvoorbeeld, is een van die afdelings wat die nodige behoeftes van studente bepaal en wys dan die nodige hulpbronne volgens di\u00e9 bepalings toe,\u201d s\u00ea
