The Animal Welfare Society of Stellenbosch (AWSS) has recorded a record breaking month with 96 dogs adopted in March. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWhat makes this record especially rewarding is that in February our Kennels had reached capacity with over 140 dogs in our care at one time,\u201dJessica Perrins, AWSS Head of Fundraising and Communications, said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The AWSS has been a lifeline to thousands of animals in need since 1956. According to Perrins the Society will never turn away an animal in need of their help, a 66-year-old promise they strive to keep. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Last year, over 1 200 unwanted, neglected, and abused dogs passed through the doors of AWSS. They came to the shelter from everywhere and by every means \u2013 by an inspector or Law Enforcement, as a stray, trotting in with heartbroken owners who couldn\u2019t afford to keep them any longer, dropped off by owners who just didn\u2019t want them anymore, sometimes with a member of the public who spotted them wandering the streets and knew AWSS would be their best chance for hope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWhen it comes to taking on a new pet \u2013 RESCUE is our favourite breed. With 96 adoptions in one month it\u2019s an incredible milestone to have achieved,\u201d said Perrins. \u201cThis record-breaking number demonstrates how deeply our community cares \u2013 and the same goes for our incredible AWSS staff and dedicated volunteers\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
While celebrating this triumph, shelter staff are aiming for another successful month. April is Prevention of Cruelty to Animals month, and the AWSS will be running an adoption promotion which reduces dog and cat adoption fees to R750. Adoption includes sterilisation, initial vaccinations (up to date of adoption) and microchipping. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
AWSS is located in Devon Valley Road, Stellenbosch. The shelter is open for adoptions Monday to Sunday from 10:00 to 15:00.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
