Die Universiteit Stellenbosch-gemeenskap is in rou gedompel n\u00e1 die heengaan van prof. Christo Viljoen, oud-visirektor en voormalige dekaan van die fakulteit ingenieurswese aan die US. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Prof. Viljoen, \u2019n gewaardeerde lid van die universiteitsgemeenskap, is Vrydagoggend (13 Januarie) in die ouderdom van 85 n\u00e1 \u2019n kort siekte oorlede.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Hy het regdeur sy lewe \u2019n beduidende plaaslike en internasionale invloed as leier, navorser en leermeester gemaak \u2013 \u2019n groot deel daarvan in US-hoedanigheid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Prof. Wim de Villiers, die US se rektor en visekanselier, s\u00ea prof. Viljoen het sy lewe aan die verbetering van die universiteit gewy. \u201cSy passie vir die US was tasbaar. Benewens sy reusebydrae as briljante akademikus, navorser en later dekaan van die fakulteit ingenieurswese, het hy \u2019n groot bydrae as onder meer viserektor vir bedryf gemaak wat die verbetering van kampusinfrastruktuur betref. Sy bydrae as toekomsdenker sal nog lank aan die US gemis word,\u201d s\u00ea prof. De Villiers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Prof. Arnold Schoonwinkel, voormalige viserektor vir leer en onderrig, s\u00ea hy sal prof. Viljoen onthou as \u2019n uitstekende dosent, administrateur en bestuurder, wat ook \u2019n ywerige belangstelling in die ruimte-ingenieurswese gehad het. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cProf. Christo het van die Sputnik- en Apollo-dae al \u2019n belangstelling in ruimte-ingenieurswese gehad. Hy was onder meer betrokke by \u2019n grondstasie wat in 1957 Sputnik se kenteken-seintjie in Stellenbosch ontvang het. In die negentigerjare en daarna was hy \u2019n groot ondersteuner van ons Sunsat-projek en hy het die US se vlag by elke geleentheid hoog hieroor gewapper.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Prof. Viljoen is oorspronklik van Graaff-Reinet en het sy studies aan die US in 1955 begin, waarna hy sy lewe lank in verskillende hoedanighede aan die universiteit verbonde was. Nadat hy sy PhD in ingenieurswese aan die US voltooi het, het hy sy studies in Engeland (1960-61) voortgesit en as ingenieur in die (destydse) departement van Pos- en Telegraafwese in Pretoria (1962-65) gewerk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Hy is in 1966 as senior lektor in die fakulteit ingenieurswese aan die US aangestel, en is in 1970 tot professor bevorder. Hy het in 1979 die dekaan van die fakulteit geword \u2013 \u2019n pos wat hy tot 1993 beklee het, waarna hy die viserektor vir bedryf tot sy aftrede in 1998 was.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As visioen\u00eare denker het prof. Viljoen daarna die kantoor vir intellektuele eiendom aan die US gestig (wat later Innovus geword het), waaruit hy in 2002 as direkteur getree het. Hy het ook as die besturende direkteur van die Unistel-groep maatskappye opgetree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Prof. Viljoen is in Maart 2006 as lid van die US Raad verkies, en hy het tot 2016 waardevolle bydraes as president van die US se konvokasie gelewer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Verdere getuienis van sy baanbrekerswerk is dat hy \u2019n deurslaggewende bydrae gelewer tot die totstandkoming van Technopark. Hy het ook \u2019n aansienlike bydrae tot die skepping en vestiging van \u2019n kuberwoordeskat in Engels en Afrikaans gelewer.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
