Stellenbosch se oudste en eerste brug, Steenenbrug, is n\u00e1 aansienlike opgradering op 5 April deur die uitvoerende burgemeester, Gesie van Deventer, amptelik oop verklaar. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Stellenbosch se munisipale woordvoerder, Stuart Grobbelaar, s\u00ea die brug, ook bekend as die Distillery Road Bridge, het oor die afgelope jaar aansienlike opgradering en konstruksiewerk ondergaan om strukturele integriteit, veiligheid en verbeterde verkeersvloei te verseker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Die konstruksiewerk van die opgradering van die brug het bykans R30 miljoen beloop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cDie brug het nou uitgebreide opgraderings en opknappings ondergaan. \u2019n Nuwe dubbelbaanbrug, wat ook \u2019n voetganger- en fietsoorgang insluit, is gebou terwyl die presiese posisie en belyning van die oorspronklike brug gehandhaaf is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cDie sentrale klipaanleg is ook in sy huidige ligging behou en so onveranderd moontlik gelaat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cDie bestaande paaltjies by die brugingang is ook as ruimtelike merkers hergebruik,\u201d s\u00ea Grobbelaar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Die wyksraadslid vir Wyk 11, Johannie Serdyn, s\u00ea die brug gaan veral voordelig wees vir plaaslike sakeondernemings in die nywerheidsgebied en in die toekomstige Adam Tas Korridor-ontwikkelingsprojek.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOns is dankbaar vir die opgradering en is opgewonde vir die toekoms,\u201d s\u00ea Serdyn. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Die oorspronklike brug wat op hierdie plek gestaan ??het, is die oudste brug in die Stellenbosch-streek.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In Augustus 1691 het die heemraad (die destydse dorpsraad) besluit om \u2019n brug langs die loop van die ou wapad te bou waar dit die Dwarsrivier aan die voet van die Papegaaiberg oorgesteek het. Met inagneming dat die heemraad net genoeg finansiering gehad het om een ??brug te bou, is op hierdie spesifieke ligging vir die brug ooreengekom omdat dit waens in staat sou stel om makliker die rivier oor te steek op die hoofroete van die Kaap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Steenenbrug was sowat 260 jaar lank die hoofingang na Stellenbosch van die Kaap \u2013 van 1691 tot die vroe\u00eb 1950\u2019s.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
