\n Can you tell us about your journey in the world of cycling? When did you first start racing, and what motivated you to pursue it professionally?<\/b>\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n Tobigunya:<\/b> \u201cI began my cycling journey on the BMX track in Kayamandi, where I developed and honed my skills. In 2008 I joined the Fairtree DP World Cannondale team and, since then, I\u2019ve never looked back. I started racing in the Spur League and gradually progressed to major stage races like the Absa Cape Epic. A turning point in my career came when I won the Exarro category at Wines2Whales and the Absa Cape Epic in 2019, putting my name on the map.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n Being a member of Fairtree DP World Cannondale, a well-known team, how has their support and training contributed to your growth as a cyclist?<\/b>\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n Tobigunya:<\/b> \u201cThe support from Fairtree DP World Cannondale has been phenomenal. We now have our own house and incredible bikes from Cannondale. DP World provided us with a van, allowing us to travel to races and experience different parts of the country. Additionally, Fairtree has provided us with mentors, and each sponsor has played a crucial role in building an exceptional team environment that fosters growth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n The African Continental Championships in Johannesburg is a significant event. What are your goals and expectations going into the competition?<\/b>\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n Tobigunya:<\/b> \u201cI aim to approach the competition without placing unnecessary pressure on myself. My plan is to ride as I always do and hopefully achieve a great result. This will be my first time racing at such a prestigious event, so my primary goal is to enjoy every second and gain valuable experience.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n Qualifying for the World Championships is a remarkable achievement. How important is it for you to perform well at the African Continental Championships to secure a spot in the World Champs?<\/b>\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n Tobigunya:<\/b> \u201cSecuring a spot at the World Championships would be an incredible achievement. I am fully committed to giving my all during the African Continental Championships. Ultimately, the outcome is beyond my control, but I will pour everything I have into this opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n As a cyclist what would you say are your strengths, and in which areas do you feel you have room for improvement?<\/b>\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n Tobigunya:<\/b> \u201cMy temperament has always been one of my strengths. I don\u2019t let the pressure of big events affect me negatively. However, I recognize that I have limited experience in XCO events. It\u2019s an area where I believe I can learn the most and further improve my skills.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n Could you share some of the challenges you have faced in your cycling career, and how have you overcome them to reach this point?<\/b>\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n Tobigunya:<\/b> \u201cComing from a disadvantaged background and growing up in the township presented numerous challenges. I had to fight for everything I have achieved. However, I have never used these circumstances as excuses. I am incredibly grateful for the support of my community and the unwavering backing of my team, which has been there for me throughout this journey of mine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n In terms of preparation, what specific training or strategies have you employed to ensure you are at your best for the upcoming championships?<\/b>\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n Tobigunya:<\/b> \u201cTo prepare for the championships, I have used the XCO track at Coetzenberg and the remarkable trail network in Stellenbosch. These training grounds have helped me maintain and enhance my skills. Additionally, we have worked with exceptional coaches and even utilized gene testing to improve our diet and endurance.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n Who are some of your role models or inspirations in the world of cycling, and why?<\/b>\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n Tobigunya:<\/b> \u201cAlan Hatherley is one of my role models and heroes. It will be a dream come true to race alongside him. His dedication, skill, and achievements have inspired me to push myself further in my own cycling career.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
