In a bid to ensure residents of the Stellenbosch policing precinct\u2019s safety this holidays, Stellenbosch police have issued a list of safety tips for locals to adhere and implement this festive season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Police spokesperson Captain Nathalie Martin said excessive consumption of alcohol is the major cause of contact crimes such as common assault, assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, rape, robbery and murder. \u201cDo not carry too much money when going to drinking places,\u201d she warned. \u201cDo not carry weapons when you attend social gatherings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cDo not share a drink with someone you do not know. Avoid confrontation when under the influence of alcohol and do not leave your drink unattended.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n Hijackings:<\/b>\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Avoid being alone in a vehicle when travelling at night and don\u2019t stop around hijacking spots or at secluded areas. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Always be alert when driving. If you suspect that you are being followed, drive to the nearest police station or call 10111. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Do not pick up hitchhikers, particularly when you drive alone, and avoid distractions like using your phone, drinking and driving. Increase caution at intersections. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n House robberies: <\/b>\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Always be on the lookout for suspicious persons and vehicles, and enhance security by fitting security gates and install burglar bars on windows. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Request neighbours to keep an eye when you\u2019re away. Do not open gates or doors for strangers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Verify the details of anyone before you employ them and check authenticity of contractors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to police, officials were loading prisoners into a vehicle to be transported to Pollsmoor Prison around 13:40, when they noticed a prisoner carrying a bag. When asked about the contents of the prohibited bag, he claimed it was toilet paper given to him by his family in court. Upon searching the bag, the officers discovered 60 Mandrax tablets rolled in white paper, two packets of cigarettes and three 100 g bags of tobacco with dagga hidden in between.
