Research projects of South African young scientists swept up several accolades at this year\u2019s International Science Technology Engineering Competition (ISTEC) in Bali, Indonesia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The fifth annual competition encouraged research and innovation in Indonesia, offering participants a distinct platform to nurture their passion for science, technology and engineering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Local scientist Isabel Lutz, a Grade 10 learner at Ho\u00ebr Meisieskool Bloemhof in Stellenbosch, scooped silver. Her research project was entitled: \u201cIntegrating AI-enabled chatbots in the classroom \u2013 friend or foe?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cParticipating in the ISTEC was an extraordinary experience, which brought me immense happiness and pride. It was a clear sign of an exceptional teamwork that we are and the successful outcomes we achieved after putting in so much effort,\u201d Lutz said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cTo the young aspiring scientists I offer this advice: persevere even when faced with challenges. Stay committed to your goals and remember that overcoming obstacles brings you closer to achieving your dreams.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Among the South African learners who took honours was Husna Docrat, a Grade 11 learner at St Dominic\u2019s Newcastle Curro in KwaZulu-Natal, who was a gold medallist and a Grand Award certificate receiver. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Rikyle Andrio Jordaan, a Grade 12 learner at Paterson High School in Gqeberha, also had a standout project: \u201cBuilding a resilient grid: Leveraging solar, wind, and hydro power for improved reliability\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Said Eskom Expo executive director Parthy Chetty: \u201cIt is very exciting to see our learners competing with some of the best in the world and excelling. These learners come from all parts of the country and it is promising to see that our long-term STEM initiatives are bearing fruit across all provinces and across all school types.
