{"id":44467,"date":"2024-07-11T08:52:09","date_gmt":"2024-07-11T06:52:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/eikestadnuus\/be-a-july-hero-donate-blood-20240710\/"},"modified":"2025-03-20T07:18:43","modified_gmt":"2025-03-20T05:18:43","slug":"be-a-july-hero-donate-blood-20240710","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/eikestadnuus\/be-a-july-hero-donate-blood-20240710\/","title":{"rendered":"Be a July hero, donate blood"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Western Cape Blood Service (WCBS) is calling on current and potential donors to become unsung heroes by donating blood to save lives in July. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the theme \u201cNot all Heroes Wear Capes\u201d, the service this month highlights that anyone, regardless of background or profession, can be a hero by becoming a blood donor. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>WCBS is experiencing the impact of the winter season and school holidays, as group O-negative blood stocks are under pressure, with only a three-day supply left. \u201cSince we are currently in the middle of winter . . . we encourage everyone to help support the many patients who need blood or blood products during this period,\u201d said Marike Carli, WCBS public relations manager. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The process of donating blood usually takes no more than 30 minutes. Donors will always have to complete the confidential donor questionnaire before they donate. Their details are captured or verified on the system and a fingerpick test is done to check their haemoglobin levels \u2013 for women it needs to be 12,5 g\/dl, while and men\u2019s levels must be 13,5 g\/dl. After this, a medical screening is done by a WCBS professional nurse, and each donor\u2019s blood pressure and pulse is checked. Donors can collect their blood bag and proceed to the donation bed, where they will donate a unit of lifesaving blood. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After donation donors are encouraged to sit for a while and a enjoy some complementary juice and cookies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To be eligible to donate blood, you need to be between 16 and 75 years old, weigh 50 kg or more, be in good general health, and live a safe sexual lifestyle. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRemember, you don\u2019t need to wear a cape to be a hero,\u201d Carli added. \u201cBecome a blood donor today and save up to three lives with one donation.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Donors who successfully donate a unit of blood during July will receive a WCBS hero-inspired pair of socks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li> For more
