Scores of children and their families flocked to Jonkershoek Nature Reserve <\/a>in February to take part in a day of learning, laughter and connection in nature as part of CapeNature\u2019s Cubs Club <\/a>programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Around 70 children and their families took part in the Cubs Club Connect 2026 event to celebrate this year\u2019s theme, “Water”. The event highlighted the importance of freshwater ecosystems, conservation, and responsible water use and featured a wide range of interactive, water-inspired activities designed to engage children between the ages of 4 and 13 years old. Teachers, group leaders and three Cubs Clubs groups also attended the event on Saturday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From hands-on educational games to outdoor challenges, participants were encouraged to explore the value of water in sustaining life while having fun in a safe, family-friendly environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cubs Club Connect also serves as a melting pot to bring families together as was demonstrated by the lively potjie kos competition. Families prepared hearty meals while embracing the spirit of teamwork and friendly competition. The activity not only added a cultural and social element to the programme but also created an opportunity for families to connect, share stories and enjoy time together outdoors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCubs Club Connect continues to play an important role in strengthening relationships between families and conservation initiatives, providing impactful outdoor learning experiences that inspire young environmental enthusiasts and help broaden the appeal of CapeNature\u2019s environmental education programme,\u201d said Shaunal Mack, CapeNature Cubs Club co-ordinator. \u201cThe 2026 event successfully reinforced the Cubs Club\u2019s commitment to environmental education through play, creativity and shared experiences.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With strong attendance and enthusiastic participation, Cubs Club Connect 2026 again proved to be a highlight on the social calendar, leaving families with lasting memories and a deeper appreciation for water as one of our most precious natural resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was an emotional scene in the gardens on Tuesday (2 September) as colleagues, former interns and friends shared stories of Kirkwood's dogged determination and passion for conservation, and willingness to give advice, help and mentor others. Many young people spoke of the seeds he planted in them to take up the baton and become conservationists themselves, claiming the best way to honour Kirkwood is to build on his legacy and work.
