A fire that left various dwellings in ruins on Thursday (30 October) has again highlighted the need for formal housing in the Khayamandi township.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All emergency services were on hand in the afternoon, after a fire broke out among shacks in Zone A, at the entrance of the Khayamandi Sports Field. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the scene yesterday councillor Ndipiwe Olayi said preliminary investigations showed 15 to 20 dwellings were affected. “Stellenbosch Municipality will conduct a proper and thorough analysis to ascertain exactly which families were affected, and we will then provide alternative [assistance] to ensure families, over the next couple of days, receive the necessary assistance as stipulated by the disaster management policy.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Emergency services contained the fire by early evening and by 21:00 the scene was under control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fire once again had residents hot under the collar about housing in the area, especially those living at the entrance to the local sport grounds, who say they should have had permanent social housing by now. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many moved to the sports grounds from the stadium, which was being upgraded for the FIFA World Cup in 2020. They set their shacks up in the parking area that had been specially created.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
