‘n Legende van rugby en die wynbedryf is hoe vriende en familie die voormalige Matie-klubrugbyspeler en oud-Springbok Jan Boland Coetzee beskryf, wat Vrydag (12 September) n\u00e1 ‘n kort siekte oorlede is. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Boland, soos hy alombekend was, het in Januarie sy 80ste verjaarsdag gevier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sy familie het vroeg Vrydag in ‘n verklaring sy afsterwe bevestig. “Ons pa is vroeg vanoggend n\u00e1 \u2019n kort siekte in sy Stellenbosch-huis oorlede. Hoewel Jan se gesondheid onder druk was die laaste paar jaar, het hy tot en met die einde sy kenmerkende vasberadenheid getoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Jan, \u2019n Weskus-boorling, was \u2019n pioenier: as rugbyspeler, vir Maties, WP en die Springbokke, maar veral as boer en wynmaker. Eers by Kanonkop in Stellenbosch en toe op Vriesenhof, wat ons familie vir baie jare \u2019n tuiste kon noem. Hy was instrumenteel om chardonnay- en pinot noir-vari\u00ebteite in Suid-Afrika te vestig,” lui die verklaring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Medelye en herinneringe van die “man van min woorde” het ingestroom van vriende soos die bioloog Dave Pepler tot sportlui soos Schalk Burger senior. “Hy was en sal \u2018n groot figuur en baie geliefd bly. Dankie vir die onuitputbare liefde en betrokkenheid van almal die afgelope tyd. Ons harte is vol,” het Burger ges\u00ea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jan “Boland” Coetzee het in 1974 vir die eerste keer as ‘n Springbok uitgedraf. Hy was ook ‘n staatmaker vir beide Maties sowel as die WP-span.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Voor Coetzee vir die eerste keer as vlank vir die Bokke in 1974 uitgedraf het, was het hy vir Maties uitgedraf. As deel van die WP-span, waarby hy in 1967 aangesluit het, het Coetzee ses toetse en 127 wedstryde gespeel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vir die Porterville-boorling was wynmaak altyd die droom. Hy het in 1963 wynkunde by die Universiteit Stellenbosch begin studeer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coetzee het in 1968 by Kanonkop aangesluit en het jare later Vriesenhof (in 1980) gekoop waar hy gehelp het om chardonnay in te voer om burokratiese beperkings te omseil. “Tegelykertyd was hy ewe passievol oor die werk van die Landelike Stigting, wat ten doel het om agri-werkers beter te ondersteun,” het die familie in die verklaring ges\u00ea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Danksy sy werk in die wynbedryf is Coetzee in 2019 deur sy alma mater met \u2019n eredoktorsgraad vereer \u2013 iets wat gesorg het vir \u2019n eindelose geskerts tussen hom en sy vriende. Die eredoktorsgraad was vir sy “strewe na uitnemendheid in die ontwikkeling van tegnologie en bestuur in die Suid-Afrikaanse wynbedryf, en in die maak van goeie Suid-Afrikaanse wyne; en vir sy vrygewigheid van gees deur sy onselfsugtige toewyding aan kennisoordrag en betrokke burgerskap om die werk- en lewensomstandighede van plaaswerkers te verbeter”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Volgens sy familie sal hulle sy unieke uitkyk en onwrikbaarheid onthou. “Jan was altyd onpretensieus, ontsettend eerlik en lief vir \u2019n storie en snaaksigheid. Ons gaan hom mis \u2013 altyd in sy kortbroek, kaalvoet of vellies, met die kenmerkende opgetrekte lang rugbykouse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ons is dankbaar vir almal wat so goed was vir hom, veral die betrokkenheid die laaste paar weke. Sy ruim en uiteenlopende vriendekring is soos familie \u2013 jare lange vriendskappe wat tot en met die einde gestrek het. Ons innige dank gaan ook aan die uitstekende, sorgsame en professionele span dokters en versorgers wat hom op sy gemak gehou het.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
