The Franschhoek Theatre will host a public lecture by Prof Karin Jacobs, a microbiologist from Stellenbosch University who will delve into the hidden yet vital world of soil microbes, on Wednesday 27 August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The talk, which forms part of the ongoing SmallTalX series, will explore the diversity of life beneath our feet and the critical role that microbes play in maintaining healthy ecosystems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Jacobs holds a PhD in Microbiology from the University of Pretoria and has built an international reputation for her research on soil microbial communities and fungal taxonomy. She has described numerous novel fungal species, has published widely, and serves on the editorial boards of several leading international journals. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
In addition to her academic contributions, she founded Sporatec, a company that applies soil microbial analysis to real-world agricultural and ecological challenges. Over her career, she has supervised dozens of postgraduate students and earned several prestigious awards, including the Meiring Naud\u00e9 Medal from the Royal Society of South Africa and the EDHE Learning and Teaching Excellence Award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Her lecture promises to shed light on how microbial diversity underpins soil health, influences ecosystems, and affects the sustainability of human activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
SmallTalX brings scientists, thinkers, and specialists to the community for accessible talks on nature and science. With a focus on curiosity and learning, the series encourages direct engagement between experts and the public through lively question-and-answer sessions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
