Locals recently stopped to gather to celebrate the 160-year-old oak tree of the Stellenbosch Moedergemeente church. The celebration, held by Pastor Jan van Zyl, took place next to the Eerste River on the Stellenbosch Art Mile, to celebrate the life and reflect on the legacy of the mighty oak which was planted in 1865. The tree was cut down earlier this year after it had become a safety concern. The tree’s story continues in a new art installation, “When the Wind Speaks”, installed by Jeroen Slee along the art mile.
