A day of football fun ended in tragedy this past Saturday (24 May) when a security guard was killed at the Khayamandi Sports Grounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Stellenbosch police are investigating the death by shooting, which took place during an apparent robbery following the local soccer match. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Police spokesperson Captain Nathalie Martin says officers were called to the sports facility at 19:00, where the body of an unknown man lay in the clubhouse. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“The deceased was a security officer at the soccer stadium and, according to his colleague, they were working as security at the soccer stadium,” Martin says.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“The last match was apparently just played when the people brought the flagpoles and other accessories into the clubhouse. The door was suddenly closed by someone who instructed everyone present to behave, as another suspect produced a firearm and threatened the two security guards, demanding they hand-over their firearms.”\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to eyewitness reports, the suspects hit the deceased security guard over the head with a torch. Afterwards both guards were pushed into a small room where a shotgun was kept.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The suspects managed to get hold of it and the two guards started pleading for their lives. The deceased allegedly tried to push the suspects and a shot went off hitting him. The persons who were being held in the clubhouse were apparently instructed to walk out together. The suspects then fled with the shotgun and a Huawei P8 cellphone.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The security guard was later declared dead on the scene by emergency personnel. No arrests had been made in connection with the incident at the time of going to print. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
