SUMMARY:Stellenbosch Madrigal Singers: Songs of Passage and Renewal
DESCRIPTION:Composers have long used the metaphor of “death” to express many different ideas: breathless moments of romance\, the peaceful end of day as twilight falls\, the quiet close of winter before spring’s awakening\, or the sweet surrender found in deep love. \n\n\n\nThese musical “deaths” are not endings but transformations – moments where one thing gives way to another. \n\n\n\nThe concert programme ranges from singing a new song to the Lord with Monteverdi and remembering Daniel’s miraculous escape from the lion’s jaws\, to the silly madrigals where infidelity meets its dramatic (and bloody!) end\, and wishes for a different kind of “death” shared with one’s true love. \n\n\n\nThe singers get nostalgic about the rolling green fields of Ireland and smile with the Beatles\, who once thought 64 was old. And they sing of the ultimate victory – the birth of a little baby through whom death and sin lose their power forever\, offering the promise of eternal life. \n\n\n\nJoin the Stellenbosch Madrigal Singers for an evening where contemplative songs are woven together with moments of joy and humour\, as they celebrate the ongoing gift of each new day we’re given to share.

DESCRIPTION:Neil Sandilands\, Schalk Joubert\, Gian Groen en Abel Kraamsaal\, vier unieke stemme in die Afrikaanse musieklandskap klim saam op een verhoog om hul liefde vir Afrikaans en hul eie halfeeu lange reis te eerbiedig. \n\n\n\nDie Vyftigers is ’n musikale viering van die lewe\, taal\, stories\, en tyd. Dis ’n produksie wat eerlik\, rou en reguit is – vol liriek\, lag\, melodie en menswees. \n\n\n\nDie ontstaan van Die Vyftigers het begin tussen die appelboorde van Grabouw\, by Gian Groen se 50ste verjaarsdagpartytjie. Tussen kitare\, staalsnare en spontane samesyn\, het Sandilands die lig gesien: vier musikale vriende\, almal besig om die 50 mylpaal te takseer\, in dieselfde jaar wat Afrikaans 100 jaar oud word.  \n\n\n\nDié kreatiewe toeval kon eenvoudig nie geïgnoreer word nie en met net een oproep na elk\, was almal aan boord. So word Die Vyftigers gebore – ’n unieke kruispunt tussen taal en tyd. \n\n\n\nElke kunstenaar bring sy eie storie\, instrument en kleur na die verhoog en tussen hul vier loopbane is daar meer as 200 jaar se kreatiewe gravitas – elke noot en elke sin is deurdrenk met betekenis. \n\n\n\nDie Vyftigers is Vrydag 11 Julie by die Daisy Jones Bar buite Stellenbosch te sien. SUMMARY:Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival
DESCRIPTION:The popular Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival (SICMF) celebrates 20 years at the US Konservatorium in Stellenbosch. \n\n\n\nThe formal evening concerts will take place at the Endler Hall at 20:00 daily\, and to celebrate the 20th rendition of the SICMF\, a special alumni orchestra has been constituted to perform a once off pre-SICMF concert on Thursday 3 July.  \n\n\n\nThe SICMF Alumni Symphony Orchestra will comprise past participants from its inception to the present. The programme will include Mahler’s gargantuan and stirring fifth symphony\, a new work by Matthijs van Dijk and Gershwin’s Concerto in F. The young up-and-coming internationally lauded South African conductor\, Jacobus de Jager will be the conductor and the concertmaster will be Ian Watson\, with Leo Gevisser as the piano soloist. \n\n\n\nThe featured composer this year is the internationally acclaimed New York based jazz pianist\, Kevin Harris whose specially commissioned work Resonance will receive its world premiere on Tuesday 8 July.  \n\n\n\nAdditional student concerts can be attended every day at 13:00 and 17:00. \n\n\n\nMuch loved regular festival artists include amongst others Nicholas Dautricourt\, Andrej Baranov\, Suzanne Martens and Farida Bacharova (violin)\, Xandi van Dijk (viola)\, Maja Bogdanovic and David Cohen (cello)\, Ekaterina Kornishina (flute)\, Dwight Parry (oboe)\, YaoGuang Zhai (clarinet)\, Marco Silva (trumpet)\, Jauvon Gilliam (percussion) and Emanuil Ivanov (piano). \n\n\n\nNew artists include Jose Garcia Gutierrez (French horn)\, one of the most respected artists of his generation; Zoran Markovic\, double bassist extraordinaire; Bram van Sambeek\, the Paganini of the bassoon and Daniel Austrich\, a violist\, who has an international reputation as a charismatic soloist and much sought-after chamber musician.  \n\n\n\nThe SICMF will conclude with four orchestral concerts\, three of which will take place in the Endler Hall and one of which will take place in the community hall in Khayamandi.
