Tyla Shepstone, a learner at Somerset College, won top honours at the Stellenbosch regional finals of this year’s Eskom Expo for Young Scientists at Paul Roos Gymnasium on Thursday 4 and Friday 5 August. Lyndon Manas, provincial coordinator of the expo, handed her prize to her. The event provides budding scientists the opportunity to display their innovative science, engineering and social research projects. Tyla was one of 256 learners from the region to participate in the expo, with 56 judges (teachers, specialists and scholars) who judged the 194 projects. A total of 35 regional finals were held countrywide. During the Stellenbosch event, a total of 69 learners received bronze medals, 71 silver and 44 gold. Four Eskom Special Award winners were announced, including Tyla for the competition’s most innovative project, Vera van der Merwe (Hoër Meisieskool Bloemhof) for the best female project, Ben van der Westhuizen and Sebastian van der Wolf (Curro Durbanville) for the best energy project, and Connor Jonkers (Spurwing Primary) for the best development project.
