Pupils of Helderberg High School recently started a community garden and harvested their first produce last week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Produce such as lettuce and spinach was sold to parents, completing the first small full circle from the first vision of farming on unused land to putting healthy organic food on the tables of urban society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The school believes gardens are amazing places for children to learn basic academic subjects and to understand what science and the natural world are all about. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
It has been an incredible journey to see the garden develop and to witness how the kids were motivated to be actively involved in every stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The idea that gardens can be a learning tool dates back a long time, and educational reformers such as Maria Montessori were great supporters of learning gardens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Children develop a feeling for the beautiful through their experiences with school gardens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Helderberg High School encourages its pupils to participate in the school garden initiative to enhance their education on a practical level, and look forward to the next harvest and expanding the initiative to the rest of the Helderberg community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
