The City of Cape Town recently noted various milestones being reached in their R2,8 billion medium-term human settlements delivery programme, which included breaking ground for the installation of bulk and internal civil services and electrification at the Macassar Housing Project. This paves the way for the construction of 2 469 homes to provide housing opportunities for beneficiaries in the Macassar community. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
On completion, the project will total approximately R800 million. \u201cThis project is in an Eskom supply area where there is currently not sufficient bulk electricity supply,\u201d stated a media release. \u201cThe City has so also made available R91m of grant funding for the commissioning of an electrical substation \u2013 that will in fact service the entire area.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The project has previously been marred by delays that angered the beneficiaries of the project (\u201cYard dwellers angry over delay\u201d<\/span>, DistrictMail & Helderberg Gazette, 1 February<\/span><\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ward 109 councillor Peter Helfrich said he was happy to see the project is moving forward as many residents have been waiting in anticipation for their homes for a long time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI want nothing more than to be able to provide our residents with their keys to their homes,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The City\u2019s Acting Mayco Member for Human Settlements, James Vos, said: \u201cOur vulnerable residents must have the chance to live in a dignified, sustainable and opportunity-rich environment.
