The Hottentots-Holland High (HHH) Drum Majorettes are calling on Helderbergers to place their hearts in their pockets in support of the talented squad members who, with much-needed financial assistance, hope to fly the basin\u2019s flag at nationals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The local outfit desperately requires sponsorships to afford them the opportunity to compete in the South African Majorette and Cheerleading Association (SAMCA) National Championships, which take place at Queensmead Stadium in Durban from Monday 3 to Saturday 8 July. The HHH drummies, who plan on making the trip to the coastal city on Saturday (1 July) and have been among the country\u2019s top five teams for more than five consecutive years, are determined to maintain the streak after qualifying for the competition again this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOur girls have done exceptionally well in all our provincial competitions, having clinched first place in all categories,\u201d said coach Karin Verster, who further boasted the team\u2019s spectacular showcase at the opening of the International Cricket Council (ICC) Women\u2019s T20 World Cup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cBeing able to compete at nationals would mean so much to the girls, for drummies is a team sport, and without the members who are not fortunate enough to go there is no team.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to Verster her avid drummies come from all over the Metro East region including areas like Kuils River and Grabouw, as well as disadvantaged communities in Macassar, Lwandle, Nomzamo, Sir Lowry\u2019s Pass, Strand and Eerste River. Most are from single-parent households and dependent on public transport and some, like many other learners at the school, have legal exemption from school fees due to financial constraints. However, coaches spend hours of training and planning out of passion for the sport and love for the teammates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Despite their adverse circumstances, they have practised really hard, dedicating their time to practice sessions every Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday after school until 17:00, and Saturdays from 09:00 to 17:00. The team boast 60 keen young women, each of whom are equally committed and dedicated. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cNot being able to compete against SA\u2019s best would mean sacrificing all the hard work they have put in this year,\u201d she insighted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Verster has dedicated over four decades to coaching drummies at the Somerset West high school out of pure passion for the sport and the children. \u201cI have dedicated 41 years fuelled by my love to work with these kids. It is the reason to get out of the bed in the morning and it keeps me young. Hopefully I can uplift the new generation and inspire them to strive above their circumstances.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The drummies\u2019 wish list comprises of any cash donations to help with the expense of realising their participation at the competition, and sponsors for T-shirts, lunchbags, food vouchers, bottles, energy drinks and snack packs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
