The revival of quality family time is being ushered in through the concept of a \u201ctoy library\u201d, now established in Gordon\u2019s Bay by the owner of a special needs school and open to the entire community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Lize Marais, owner and principal of Milkwood Learning Centre in Watt Street, the Milkwood Toy Library is one of two in the Helderberg, with another in Macassar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe opened our doors on World Play Day on 28 May, and over the last couple of months have garnered quite a few members as the idea, slowly but surely, gathers pace,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Asked to recall her interest in opening such a facility, Marais said she joined the Toy Library Association of South Africa some years ago and earlier this year attended the International Toy Library Congress held in Melbourne, Australia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen I returned with all these great ideas and information on how to best implement a toy library, I finally decided it was time to open one in Gordon\u2019s Bay. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMany of the toys were sponsored by suppliers and we also received donations of pre-loved toys. We set it up at the school premises in Watt Street, and now are going full steam ahead.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She explained anyone in the community can become a member for R50 a month, get a card and afterwards they are welcome to book up to three toys and a puzzle for two weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a relatively new concept in these parts so many people are still getting used to it. It really encourages parents to play again with their kids; they come in here and have a ball of a time choosing toys. It brings families together it fosters friendships and it\u2019s fun all round and a special community project.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Milkwood Toy Library already has 22 members and is imagining bigger premises with more toys as memberships grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI would also encourage others to consider opening more toy libraries in the area so everybody can experience the joy it brings to the whole family,\u201d Marais said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt doesn\u2019t require a major set-up, and if you love toys and children it\u2019ll be perfect. You can also make a little money along the way.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
