{"id":83470,"date":"2023-10-11T07:47:00","date_gmt":"2023-10-11T05:47:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/districtmailhelderberg\/riverside-rugby-stars-soar-to-new-heights-20231011-3\/"},"modified":"2025-03-20T08:03:26","modified_gmt":"2025-03-20T06:03:26","slug":"riverside-rugby-stars-soar-to-new-heights-20231011-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/districtmailhelderberg\/riverside-rugby-stars-soar-to-new-heights-20231011-3\/","title":{"rendered":"Riverside rugby stars soar to new heights"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Macassar community and Riverside Girls\u2019 Rugby Academy is celebrating the achievements of two of its players, who have performed extremely well over the past season, having represented the community at provincial and national level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Logan Welman was selected for Western Province and played in the under-18 girls\u2019 week, while Senica Adams also represented the WP under-20 team and was also selected for the under-20 junior Springbok women\u2019s team that played against Zimbabwe last month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both girls expressed immense gratitude for the opportunities and are already eyeing places in the provincial and national squads next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eighteen-year-old Logan, who is currently in Grade 11 at Macassar High School, also made the WP girls\u2019 team last year. Despite progressing again this year, she managed to play only five minutes at the girls\u2019 rugby week in Johannesburg in July after she sustained a knee injury early in her side\u2019s first match. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was really heartsore, because at that moment I knew I would not be able to continue at the rugby week,\u201d she recalled. \u201cI\u2019m still nursing the injury, but I am recovering well. I\u2019m committed to continuing training and working hard to make the provincial squad next year.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Senica, a learner at Zandvliet High, was selected for the WP under-20 women\u2019s team that participated at the SA Rugby under-20 Women\u2019s Week in Mthatha, following trials held in September.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The WP side was the only team to win all three of their games. Following her performance in the Eastern Cape, Senica was selected for the junior Springbok women\u2019s team that was victorious over Zimbabwe by 29-10.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was an honour to be selected, as this is exactly what I have been working so hard to achieve,\u201d she said. \u201cWe played in East London against Zimbabwe and wearing the Springbok colours made me so proud.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 19-year-old is committed to improving her game and hopes to make the cut into the senior SA women\u2019s rugby team next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Riverside academy coaches Anthony Jackson and Jacobus Flaendorp said it is exciting to see the girls progress and develop their game, and it motivated youngsters in the community who look up to the girls as role models.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u00a0<span><span id=\"U101607298670vfF\" style=\"color:#bebebe;\">The academy welcomes sponsorships, and anyone interested can call Jackson on
