Strand Library patron Skyler Plaatjies (10) was named the winner in the Afrikaans category of the City of Cape Town\u2019s Library and Information Service\u2019s writing competition for learners aged between nine to 13 and 14 to 17. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The competition, which closed on Wednesday 28 August, saw 131 stories submitted with category winners announced at the Open Book Festival held at the Homecoming Centre in Cape Town on Saturday (7 September). <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Learners who entered the competition had to write a story about an environmental hero, either as a short or long-form story, graphic novel, picture book or novel. Writing workshops were held at numerous libraries to assist learners in acquiring writing skills. Stories were submitted in English, Afrikaans and isiXhosa. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Afrikaans category received no entries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The winning submissions will either be published, or loaded onto the Library Service\u2019s Libby app. The winning stories for the nine to 13-year-old categories will be used for the Library Reading Programme that will be rolled out in December. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe are pleasantly surprised by the number of entries, the excitement and the quality of the stories submitted by the learners,\u201d said Patricia van der Ross, Mayoral Committee member for Community Services and Health. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
