Fourie eventually contacted the police and the Explosives Unit was called out to assess and seize the item.<\/p>\n<div class=\"p\" xml_lang=\"en-uk\">\n<div class=\"p\" xml_lang=\"en-uk\">\n<div class=\"p\" xml_lang=\"en-uk\">Helfrich said many residents who visit the beach daily were concerned for their safety and suspected the local ammunition manufacturing depot, Rheinmetall Denel Munition (RDM) which is located in the vicinity of where the item was found. With many turning to him for answers, Helfrich championed the task of getting to the bottom of the matter.<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"p\" xml_lang=\"en-uk\">\n<p>\u201cWhen I initially heard about the matter, I contacted the senior management of RDM to ask them to provide me with formal feedback. I received a speedy response, stating that their experts have closely studied the photographs of the ammunition which was found on Macassar Beach and is being shared on social media. They informed me that they can, with absolute certainty, confirm that the item is not a RDM product. They stated that they do not make, nor have they ever made this particular item,\u201d said Helfrich.<\/p>\n<div class=\"p\" xml_lang=\"en-uk\">\u201cIn their response they also confirmed that the item is an old tear-gas grenade which was made to be fired from a rifle. According to them, it was on the beach because these types of items were historically tested in wide open spaces like beaches. They also confirmed their experts are available to assist in any way possible should police require additional
