{"id":47750,"date":"2024-06-05T04:00:25","date_gmt":"2024-06-05T02:00:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/districtmailhelderberg\/qualify-for-coct-write-off-20240604-2\/"},"modified":"2025-03-21T10:03:12","modified_gmt":"2025-03-21T08:03:12","slug":"qualify-for-coct-write-off-20240604-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/districtmailhelderberg\/qualify-for-coct-write-off-20240604-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Qualify for CoCT write-off?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Locals with old municipal debt could qualify for the City of Cape Town\u2019s debt write-off incentive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The special-assistance initiative serves to write-off old debt in an effort to help qualifying customers and acts as an incentive to encourage residents to pay off their current debts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cQualifying customers may apply for the write-off of arrear debt older than about three years,\u201d said the City\u2019s Mayoral Committee member for Finance, Councillor Siseko Mbandezi, \u201cprovided they enter into a payment agreement with the City for the remainder of their debt. This is one of our ways to offer support to those who are struggling, but at the same time to encourage a culture of payment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen one has a lot of old debt, it often becomes increasingly difficult to keep up with payments of both the old debt and current debt. By giving qualifying customers this opportunity, it not only reduces the pressure on them, but also provides a clean slate to encourage them to pay what they can and keep up to date with their payments. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA healthy payment culture is vital for the health of the municipality and continued delivery of services. We thank our residents for their payments and the trust they put in the City. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe City has among the highest levels of social support of any metro in South Africa.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How to qualify:<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Enter into a debt payment arrangement for current debt; <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Debt older than three financial years will be considered to be written-off automatically; and <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A condition of the payment arrangement is that the debt written-off will be reinstated if customers default on their instalment plans. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Documents needed:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Copy of ID; <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Proof of income; <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Current account to be paid upfront plus an additional sum towards the arrears. This will be determined by the front office, based on affordability; <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Three months\u2019 bank statements;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An affidavit if unemployed; and . If the account is in more than one person\u2019s name, then a letter of consent will be required plus all the documents above.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Contact:<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul
