Op 45 het sy haarself in \u2019n stryd teen uitputting bevind. \u201cDie chaos van die pandemie het net tot my stres bygedra. Inperkings, tuisonderrig en werk van die huis af het die grense tussen my persoonlike en professionele lewe vervaag. My moegheid het so intens geword dat selfs basiese take onoorkombaar gevoel het, wat spanning en frustrasie by die huis veroorsaak het. Met beperkte geld en die meeste mense wat dokters en hospitale vermy, het dit onmoontlik gelyk om \u2019n dokter te besoek \u2013 totdat \u2019n vriend begin belangstel het en aangedring het om \u2019n afspraak vir my te maak. Ek was te uitgeput om te weier en het vir die ondersoek gegaan, sonder om te besef hoe gelukkig ek was om haar ondersteuning te h\u00ea,\u201d deel sy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Op hierdie punt het Ronell\u00e9 reeds vir twee maande gemenstrueer. \u201cEk was by die dokter vir \u2019n roetine-papsmeer, in die hoop om te bevestig dat alles reg is. Terwyl ek daar was, het ek lukraak my terugtrekkende tandvleis genoem \u2013 \u2019n nuwe bekommernis wat opgeduik het. Verrassend genoeg was dit hierdie toevallige opmerking wat die dokter se aandag getrek het,\u201d onthou sy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Die dokter het \u2019n volledige bloedtelling aanbeveel. \u201cAangesien ek slegs \u2019n basiese hospitaalplan en beperkte geld gehad het, het ek gehuiwer. Maar die dokter was bekommerd dat daar iets ernstigs aan die gang kon wees en wou dit opgevolg. My skoonsuster het daarop aangedring dat ons die volgende oggend na die patoloog gaan. Ek het kort n\u00e1 die toets \u2019n oproep van die dokter af gekry met die vraag of ons enige oorerflike bloedsiektes het. Ek het geantwoord \u2018nee.\u2019 Sy het my toe opdrag gegee om onmiddellik na die hospitaal in Somerset-Wes te gaan, waar hulle reeds voorberei het vir \u2019n dringende bloedoortapping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cEk het nie besef hoe ernstig dit was nie. Sonder dat ek dit geweet het, het ek doodgebloei \u2013 \u2019n feit wat ek veel later sou ontdek. Ek het die kinders vertel dat ek vir \u2019n paar dae in die hospitaal sou wees vir \u2019n bloedoortapping, en daarna vertrek. Daar het \u2019n hematoloog homself voorgestel en, met byna sekerheid, AML by my gediagnoseer \u2013 \u2019n aggressiewe bloed-en-beenmurgkanker.
