Twenty young people from the Helderberg have taken a significant step towards employment through the Youth Driver Development Programme (YDDP).\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The participants, nominated from informal settlements within the basin, attended a contract-signing ceremony on Thursday 11 June at the Strand Municipal Building, where the Subcouncil 8 and the Road Accident Fund (RAF) presented them with its programme agreements.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The YDDP equips participants with essential driving qualifications, including Code 10 and Code 14 learner’s and driver’s licences and a Professional Driving Permit, while instilling professionalism and promoting responsible road use.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The initiative addresses two pressing challenges facing communities: high youth unemployment and road safety. Subcouncil 8 and the RAF say the programme creates pathways into the road freight, logistics and passenger transport industries by training young people to become competent qualified drivers while contributing to safer roads for all.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Subcouncil 8 chairperson Chantal Cerfontein expressed optimism about the prospects the training would bring for beneficiaries. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“For many the programme represents a gateway to sustainable livelihoods and long-term career growth.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Acting Subcouncil 8 manager Nonzuzo Jacob said the selection of beneficiaries from informal settlements reflects the subcouncil’s commitment to inclusivity, ensuring development opportunities reach those who need them most.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
