Just four months ago the Helderberg Pool Union (HPU) and Pool4Change launched the Macassar Schools’ 8-Ball Pool League with a vision to transform cue sports into a safe haven for local youth. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today that vision has yielded historic results.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A select group of talented young players from Macassar has officially qualified to participate in the upcoming Pool South Africa National Tournament in Potchefstroom. The teams are scheduled to depart the Western Cape on Friday 10 July to compete against the country’s best before returning on Monday 20 July.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The road to nationals has been paved with intense commitment. Following the league’s official start at the end of March, learners from various local schools have participated in a rigorous weekly Saturday league to showcase and sharpen their talents (“Cue sports taking aim to the future<\/a>,” DistrictMail & Helderberg Gazette, 1 April).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adiel Rhoda, public-relations officer for the HPU, said the players’ achievements are a direct result of roughly four months of dedication and discipline. “These are very proud moments to have been in a position to be able to select youth from Macassar to participate at the national level. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“For many of these youngsters this is a life-changing opportunity, not just to play their sport but to see and travel outside of the Western Cape province for the very first time.”\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rapid success of the league highlights a collaborative effort among local education structures, NPOs and corporate sponsors, who stepped-up to remove financial barriers for the children. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Key contributors making this life-changing trip possible include Boys Night Out NPO, who fulfilled a crucial pledge made during the league’s launch. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The organisation has sponsored the accommodation costs, ensuring a safe and comfortable stay for the learners in Potchefstroom.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Rhodes Food Group (RFG) has also stepped in to assist with the substantial food and dietary requirements for the travelling teams, while False Bay Primary School principal Desmond Engelbrecht and his team have been foundational to the project from day one, generously availing school facilities for practices and league matches.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A special mention was also made of the HPU development team of coaches and organisers, who contributed countless hours preparing the youths to compete at the highest levels of South African cue sports.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the journey does not stop in Potchefstroom; the league organisers are already looking ahead to keep the momentum going and continuously push Macassar’s youth from strength to strength. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Plans are already underway for the next major tour in the September school holidays, where the union aims to send Macassar school teams to compete at the National Schools’ Pool Championships in Durban.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the progress has been remarkable, sustained funding is vital to keep these opportunities alive for the children. The HPU invites corporates and potential donors to partner with it as cue sports take aim at a brighter future for Macassar’s youth. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
