“Stop waiting for the stars to align perfectly. Use what you have.”\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These were the words of Macassar resident Derico Jansen, who is on a mission to inspire readers to pick up a pen and write their own stories. Channelling Maya Angelou’s famous reminder that the “perfect circumstance” doesn’t exist, Jansen recently took his own advice and published an e-book about his life.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inspired by a character in a Stephen King novel, the free book chronicles a normal “bra” from Macassar finding his way through life’s highs and lows. Entitled Project Derico Devine Jansen 2.0 it’s a raw story of rebirth, resilience and the power of starting exactly where you are with the technology right in your hands.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The spark for Jansen’s book came from Stephen King’s Billy Summers, a thriller about a marine-turned-assassin who poses as a writer working on a top-secret manuscript. “Initially, my book was also top-secret,” he shared. “I told absolutely no-one. Even though Billy took a vastly different path, we shared a lifelong dream of writing.”\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Driven by an early love for libraries Jansen grew up obsessed with thick books, striking phrases such as the local “hou julle dop” and a wide array of niche interests, from card magic and chess to astronomy and the occult.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To fit into his surroundings he often felt the need to hide his intellect. “Billy would actively dumb himself down around his bosses to avoid suspicion. I often found myself doing the same with friends and family. Billy’s obsession was rifles; for me, that intense, isolated focus was poured into my interests. It’s a lonely road but, unlike a classic King thriller, I am making a conscious choice not to avenge my younger self. I choose to make the most of the one life I have.”\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looking back<\/mark><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Ultimately, Project Derico Devine Jansen 2.0 captures that entire journey. “It’s my life story up to this moment. From being born at the Macassar Day Clinic to changing schools and navigating various jobs \u2013 it’s been a wild ride, and I feel as if it’s just getting started.”\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said his book is a free public service. “I am simply grateful for the opportunity to share my story with readers… I just want everyone to be able to access it. It is a wonderful privilege even to have a book to read.”\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Jansen looks back at his roots his perspective shifts. “Now that I think of it I realise I’m not just a ‘normal bra from Macassar’.” \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While his youth included everyday realities such as playing with friends and attending soup kitchens, it was also shaped by faith and ambition. “My parents are a living testimony of this. They took a massive leap of faith and went back to study at an advanced age, going all the way to postgraduate level.” \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His mother was writing her own book about a journey that included hitchhiking from Macassar to Stellenbosch University (SU).\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Growing up also meant witnessing the harsh impacts of crime, drug abuse and teenage pregnancy. “It taught me from a young age there are heavy consequences if one doesn’t stay on course,” Jansen reflected. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After university he brought his mathematics expertise back home to tutor local youth. “If one just sits down and talks to people on their level one discovers a wealth of wisdom there.”\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jansen wants outsiders to look past the negative headlines of crime and unemployment. “There is so much more to our community. We have a beautiful beach within walking distance, diverse cultures living in harmony and a deeply rooted Muslim community in Sandvlei. We must learn to count the little blessings in our townships, such as livestock grazing freely on open green fields or just sitting in the park near Shoprite enjoying a Coca-Cola.”\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Candid account <\/mark><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Writing honestly about the harder chapters of his life was a challenge that left him deeply exposed, but pushing through that vulnerability helped him heal. He believes pure honesty is the only way a life story can truly impact someone else, writing openly about his addictions to alcohol, tobacco and pornography. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said it’s no good hiding those struggles, particularly among men, as true healing occurs when those monsters are brought to light.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The highs that kept him going were deeply meaningful, such as being accepted by SU armed with bursaries, and being sponsored by Yes4Youth with a Microsoft exam voucher. With limited data he would sit near the local clinic to use its Wi-Fi to complete his modules \u2013 small wins that kept the fire burning in dark periods. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For him being “reborn” is a gradual spiritual awakening, the result of deep soul searching that has filtered into every facet of his life. Drawing further meaning from astrology he sees Uranus moving into his sun sign, Gemini, as the universe ushering in this season of breakthrough and growth. It is, he says, an ongoing journey of stepping into his full potential.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To his younger self, Jansen would say: “Speak your truth. Live your truth. Embody your truth.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
