To cultivate a weekly gathering where the community could harvest unique, healthy, preservative-free products and fresh produce that had never quite taken root in traditional stores.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This fertile vision blossomed into the Helderberg Farmer’s Market, a weekly crop of local treasures that has grown from humble beginnings into the cream of the crop among the basin’s most fruitful community staples.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The market sprouted to life in February last year, thanks to Michelle Vermaak’s dedication and vision. She single-handedly nurtured the market through its entire first year, a remarkable feat that earned deep respect from everyone involved. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In February this year three passionate community members \u2013 Angi Venter, Leasyl Toughey and Nicole van Tonder \u2013 took operations over, bringing fresh energy while honouring Vermaak’s foundational work. “We take our hats off to Michelle,” said Venter, echoing the sentiment of others in the current team. “Running this market single-handedly showed incredible dedication; we know how much work it is even with three of us!”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vermaak remains integral to the market family, continuing to operate her popular Veggie Foods stand while serving as a trusted adviser. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

‘Discover something special<\/mark>‘ <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The market operates at Helderberg High School, where Vermaak’s existing connections helped establish this partnership, providing the perfect venue for community gatherings.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We’re incredibly fortunate to have key vendors who’ve been with us from day one, forming our market’s backbone,” Venter pointed out.
“We’ve also welcomed exciting new vendors, creating a diverse marketplace where everyone discovers something special.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every Wednesday visitors find an abundance of treasures spanning the spectrum of local goodness.

Stalls brim with fresh fruit and vegetables (organic and conventional), artisanal nuts, olives, honey and speciality mushrooms.

Food lovers enjoy sprouted goods, deli-style products, sourdough bread, gourmet coffee and fruit smothered in Dubai chocolate.
Beyond edibles, marketgoers can also discover handcrafted leather handbags, original arts and crafts, and children’s toys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The vendor family includes special local small businesses such as Toughey’s Products (deli-style charcuterie), Niks Nuts (organic macadamias and walnuts), Olive Grove Cottage, Just Pure Bee, Backerei, Health Mushrooms, Sprout-Bringer and Easy Organic. Newest additions include Doggy Lodge & Co (natural pet treats), Twaksak (leather goods), Afrikidz (African-inspired toys), R & M (farm-fresh produce) and Anton (original art magnets).\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

“Perhaps our greatest highlight is our commitment to being here every Wednesday, rain or shine,” Venter said. “We love adding special touches \u2013 from Easter egg hunts to themed celebrations \u2013 but the real magic happens in our consistent weekly community gathering.”\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Venter, what sets the market apart is the magical weekly gathering where relationships flourish in a family-friendly atmosphere; children play safely while parents connect with vendors and neighbours. Beyond community spirit, their unwavering commitment to natural, preservative-free products offers a healthy alternative to supermarket shelves filled with unpronounceable ingredients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Find the market at Helderberg High School, Annandale Drive inn Somerset West, every Wednesday from 15:30 to 17:30 (18:00 in summer). Located under the covered stoep with convenient parking and pedestrian gate access, rain or shine, the market will be there! Pets and children are very welcome.
