The Squares for Care campaign, launched on 4 February in recognition of World Cancer Day, is steadily gaining momentum as communities across South Africa unite for a shared purpose, culminating in a “Big Count” on Mandela Day (18 July).\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The ambitious goal is to unofficially surpass the current world record of 100 581 knitted or crocheted squares, each measuring approximately 15 x 15 cm. Beyond breaking records, the initiative aims to raise awareness of hospice and palliative care while creating blankets of 48 squares each for distribution to hospice patients needing warmth and comfort during winter months.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Support for the campaign has been overwhelming. Yarn and craft companies have generously donated wool in every colour and texture, while crafters from across the country continue joining daily, contributing their time, skill and compassion.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Messages of encouragement and participation are pouring in from small towns to bustling communities. From Bethal, Mpumalanga, Anita Marais shared: “Have crocheted 40. It was wonderful and a huge challenge!”\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Lizelle Steyn from Strand wrote: “I am a stage 4 cancer patient and I’m so grateful for the support I receive from Helderberg Hospice. At least I can give something back.”\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ina Venter from Kleinmond reported completing 174 blocks, while the Letsitele Craft Club from a small town between Tzaneen and Phalaborwa represents the rural reach of the campaign.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For many the campaign holds deep personal meaning. Hendriette Hanekom from Tzaneen reflected: “120 blocks done \u2013 it’s with lots of love and gratitude in my heart for Helderberg Hospice. In March our family commemorates the 20th year of the passing of my father-in-law. He was cared for with the greatest love and dignity.”\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Contributors span the country, from The Creative Girls in Strand to Marleen in Brits, North West Province, and Martie Visser in Kroonstad, Free State, each adding their unique contribution to this effort.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
From small towns to bustling communities, crafters are joining hands, hooks and needles in celebration of hospice and palliative care services. The warmth and compassion that hospices extend to patients and their families are reflected in every square, each crafted with love, each making a difference.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
