For 40 years Helderberg Hospice<\/a> has cared for the community, helping people and their loved ones navigate their serious-illness journey. While cancer in its many forms is not the only serious illness the hospice treats it remains the most common condition experienced by its patients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To help sustain hospice and palliative care the organisation is inviting the community to participate in a creative challenge to help set a new world record for the largest display of knitted or crocheted squares. The current world record stands at 100 581 squares.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On World Cancer Day <\/a>(4 February), Helderberg Hospice invites locals to visit its shop at 150 Main Road, Somerset West, armed with a ball of wool and knitting needles or a crochet hook, to create a 15 cm \u00d7 15 cm square.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Event coordinator Cel\u00e9stine van der Merwe said: “This is only the beginning. Please don’t stop there! Keep creating these squares to help us beat the record by Mandela Day in July. Encourage friends, colleagues, families, loved ones, churches, schools and colleges to join this challenge.”\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the count, the squares will be joined together to make blankets for patients, bringing the warmth and love of the Helderberg community to those who need it most.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
