As the Cape’s winter rolls in, the False Bay coastline is undergoing a transformation. \r<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Cool winds sweep across the water, heavy clouds cast shadows over the coast, and the ocean reveals a different kind of rhythm. For shore anglers, or at least those who brave the cold the rocks, beaches and estuary mouths, winter presents a great opportunity, but also responsibility. \r<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We see the return of our awesome national fish like galjoen, white steenbras, belman stumpnose and, in the past, musselcracker. I say “in the past” because Strand and surrounds was once an awesome area to target white and black musselcracker.\r<\/p>\n\n\n\n
False Bay’s winter fishing scene needs to become as much about tradition as it is about conservation. At the heart of this shift is a growing understanding that responsible fishing is not a limitation, but a must!\r<\/p>\n\n\n\n
False Bay remains one of the Cape’s richest angling environments although it may not seem that way. \r<\/p>\n\n\n\n

False Bay’s winter shoreline hosts a wide variety of target species. Unlike boat-based fishing that chases migratory species offshore, shore anglers rely on tides, structure, and patience to pursue harder-earned but equally rewarding catches.\r<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The winter shoreline is alive with fish; we just need more anglers to put on the wetsuits and jackets and get out there to fish. Winter is certainly my favourite time to fish. \r<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But what separates a sustainable fishery from a collapsing one is not the number of rods in the sand, but the attitude behind them.\r<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This is where Fishing Republic plays an essential role. Located just minutes from some of the best beach and reef fishing on this coast, the shop serves as a guardian of the conservation ethos. Staffed by extremely knowledgeable anglers, the store does more than sell tackle \u2014 we equip anglers with the tools and understanding to fish ethically and sustainably.\r<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Fishing Republic promotes circle hooks for safer catch-and-release, barbless options for reducing injury, and up-to-date size or bag limits.\r<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We also run shore-based fishing clinics, especially in winter, helping new and experienced anglers target species like steenbras and galjoen while educating them on seasonal closures and ethical release practices. We also love to teach anglers how to handle fish safely in the shoreline, how to tag and take genetic samples for further study. \r<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We also participate in coastal clean-ups and citizen science projects, such as tagging and catch logging, genetic sampling and putting pressure on those who take advantage of the ocean. We ensure that conservation remains a part of the everyday fishing routine.\r<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It’s easy to get swept up in the excitement of winter fishing when the reels scream and the sea gives generously. But the most memorable catches are those fish you can tag and release safely for future generations to enjoy.\r<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Responsible shore anglers should photograph and release trophy fish, educate peers and young anglers about size limits and protected areas. Also leave no trace \u2014 take all tackle, bait packaging and waste home, and log catches using apps or notebooks to contribute to long-term sustainability.\r<\/p>\n\n\n\n
False Bay’s winter coastline is not just a place of fish and surf. It’s a living classroom, a cultural touchstone, and a delicate ecosystem that gives much but can be undone by neglect. With iconic species returning to shore and the cold air sharpening our senses, winter offers both reward and reflection. Whether you’re after a giant steenbras or simply enjoying the time in nature or the sound of the waves, do so with the understanding that this place is a privilege to fish. \r<\/p>\n\n\n\n
