A part of Macassar Beach will be closed for about a week while contractors undertake the decommissioning of the temporary Monwabisi desalination plant.

The area next to the demarcated bathing area on the beach will be closed from next Monday (26 April) to Monday 3 May, the City of Cape Town said in a statement.

“This is to allow contractors to remove the intake pipeline, which will be floated from the decommissioned desalination plant at Monwabisi,” council said.

The dates have been predicted as favourable to conduct these towing and removal operations in terms of weather conditions. The temporary closure is a safety measure, and the rest of facilities at the beach will remain open for public use.

“Once the intake pipeline has been fully removed, the City will ensure that the area is restored to the same condition as before,” the City stated. – DistrictMail
