According to Jermaine Carelse, spokesperson for the City Fire and Rescue Service, the Fire Service received the call just after 12:09 on Monday.
He said: “It is believed the vehicle left the roadway and subsequently collided with the fence. There were three occupants in the vehicle. The driver died on impact.” He added a fire engine from Macassar and a rescue vehicle from Strand, with a total of seven firefighters, responded and rushed to the scene.
They found one person dead on their arrival, one patient in a critical condition and another with slight injuries. “The patient in a critical condition was treated and transported to Helderberg hospital by a Metro ambulance,” said Carelse.
Sergeant Suzan Jantjies, spokesperson for Somerset West police, said police had obtained video footage of the accident and were busy studying the footage.
“No other vehicle was involved,” she said. “Two other passengers were in the vehicle and were transported to hospital for medical attention. The details of all involved is still unknown. Detectives are working on the case.”
Jantjies requested anyone who witnessed the accident to come forward and contact Detective Warrant Officer Valton Lategan on 021 850 1344. Station Commander Colonel Jacolize Fleischmann expressed her condolences to the family of the deceased.
